After 5 1/2 months my engine is back in and this evening we've heard that sweet capristo sound once more ! It's been a long hard slog to get it this far, but it's all worth it to hear that crisp rev again. It'll be back in my grubby little paws by the weekend, we just need a new throttle cable as we accidentally messed up the old one and it has issues returning back to idle. Daniel / David from Ricambi are already on top of that though, so I expect it'll be out and about this weekend. It originally started as a 30k service, but ended up as much more as Mike (my very patient mechanic) found lots of worn parts. I'm really glad I went with his gut feeling and pulled the oil chain cover ... we found both tensioners badly worn, and one was just about to fall off. I know the plenum housing won't be in everyones favor, and the picture doesn't really do it justice it actually looks pretty decent in real life. The crappy picture was taken with an iPhone and it was in odd lighting. glad the long, much anticipated wait is finally coming to an end! I hope she'll be ready asap so you can continue to enjoy her in great health! please keep us posted and post pictures!!
Congrats Simon! I think my tensioners looked even worse, so I'm also upgrading to the new ones.... lots of little things slowing me up.. but I'll get there.
One thing I found out is that when I upgraded the oil tensioners I needed the actual bracket the bottom one goes on as well. It was confusing because the hole in the new tensioner was too small to go over the peg in the casing. A new bracket and a swift $180 sorted that out though. The actual plastic top on mine had edged it's way over and was about to fall off totally eeeeekkkk !
That looks fantastic!!!! Well done. Be sure to post photo's from the first drive with the fresh service. Congrats!!!
Great job! Good call on the tensioner!. I belive that everyone that still has the original tensioer in their 348, can start to save up the cash now.... Have you cheked your gearbox bearings?
Right Simon.. My timing tensioner was also very loose and sliding off. The new one is on tight, but design looks pretty much the same. Once it wears into the chain, the chain should also help keep it in place, but my old one was also loose which is scary. The new oil pump tensioner was redesigned to avoid having the pad slip off (mount was cut and bent up to fix the pad on the mount). I also noticed in drawings that the new oil chain tensioner req'd a new pin, washer, and c-clip to attach the new tensioner properly... so I was prepared. Don't mean to mess up your thread, but here are a couple pics of my old tensioners and my new chains, inner drive bearing, and oil tensioner (still need to install new washer and c-clip to fasten the tensioner).
