Yesterday evening I took delivery of the 1957 Scaglietti body fitted to #0656 when it was sent back to the works by Chinetti after George Arents' crash at Bridgehampton in 1957.

I bought it from Darryl Greenameyer who owned the car from 1980-86 and retained the body when the next owner (Obrist) decided to have a replica 290S body made.

The car was raced extensively through 1958 & 1959 by ED Martin in USA, and I would be very interested to see photos of it in action during this period.

It is similar to the 315S bodies prepared for Buenos Aires with nose arrangement of the (later) pontoon fender TR but without the cut away fenders/wings. I understand this was to get more air to the front brakes, and in my view it's even better looking than the TR body. Clearly the pontoon fender TR body was developed via these cars.

    Thanks guys.

This reminds me to post the photos I have to save repetition.

We haven't unloaded the body yet from the aluminium purpose built container that Darryl made for air freighting the car, so the bodywork photos are from before I bought it.

The one shot I have of ED Martin is from Cavallino 167. (couldn't work out how to attach this same as the others but my nubile PA is still sleeping sweetly and I daren't disturb...)

The Monterey racing photo posted by Giotto is the least attractive view of the car to me as it has the nose high under acceleration (rear springs to soft?). The other Monterey shot was from a recent post on Fchat and 0656 is on the right.

The first photo with the inverted n°47 is #0660MDTR, a 500 TRC.

Yes, the plan is to make a 250TR chassis and get all the right bits to make a customer spec 250TR although no TR had exactly this body. It should get FIA papers so I can race it in plenty of European events where Classiche isn't involved. Getting the parts (ie the 4 cam V12 engine & transaxle) for a 315S copy isn't an affordable option.

Anyone with surplus suitable (50's) 250 parts please get in touch! I have a 250 PF Coupe & other parts to exchange if neccessary.

...but don`t show up in Bella Italia! When they scrap an original (!) Maserati 350S-V12 engine in a replica they can take your car as well, throwing it into orbit!

    Ciao!

I have seen it written that the front of the 315S's were modified (1957) to allow more cold air to the brakes for Buenos Aires. They didn't have the cutaway behind the wheels (presumably to let the air out). The pontoon fender 250TRs came later and the body in your photo looks sort halfway between the two. But it doesn't look quite right to me, especially the doors, the flare for the instrument panel, the apparently short tail section, and the vent in front of the doors. Is it a later replica body and if not where did it come from?

I live in Dothan and can confirm that ED Martin won both the 58 and 59 SCCA races held at Napier Field which was a WW II Army Air Corp training field. In 58 he was driving a TR and in 59 a Birdcage Maserati. He took the Birdcage to Daytona for the 24 hr race and crashed it. He almost died from the burns of that crash.

    Yes, it's a 1953 6C2500 PF Berlina.

I have just sold it as I'm going through a project concentration exercise. I discovered after the deal was concluded that the buyer is planning to use the only the mechanical parts for a Corsa type project. A huge shame, but then I managed to buy back (very cheaply) all the body work including the chassis (but not with it's ID) which is complete with all glass, lights, switches & trim and fittings. I've no idea what to do with it but at least it is all together still.

Thnaks for this response which I somehow missed until today. Are you sure he was driving the TR rather than the 315S in the '58 Dothan race?
