I know this has been discussed here before but I can't find the post anywhere lol. I noticed very light white residue in my both my tail pipes and only on one side of the double, this occurred after a very very spirited drive with friends to a near by town for coffee. The car runs awesome no hesitation no slow down lights she is perfect, so I don't think there should be a concern, should there be? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Congratulations, this is a sign for a perfect combustion ! The 2 pipes with the with powder are the pipes that are used when the exhaust bypass opens. Regards Andi
Do not think it is a sign of running perfectly, when an unleaded car runs perfectly it is a rusty brown colour, when your catalytic converters are on the way out they deposit white powder in the exhaust and this looks like this is the tell tail sign of a weary cat.
Nope your cats may be dying .......... ................... Andi ..... a 348 does not have a 'bypass' ........
Unfortunately, I think Frari and Goth are correct... is it time for a test pipe? Or, do you have to pass emissions year to year? Mike in Kuwait
Just another asside, your oil line in this photo is sitting on your exhaust pipe, looking at other 348"s this line runs under the exhaust and does not touch it, see this post board with PAPS car and the "spacers" topic it clearly runs under the pipe.
Pap, I had the same white residue on my exhaust tips after a trackday. A Ferrari mechanic who looked at it on the day said it was the cats breaking up. However, they were newly installed Hyper-flow cats which have stainless steel metallic cores rather than ceramic cores. Haven't seen the white residue since, but haven't done a trackday since then either. A few people have later said it's a sign of the car running well and they've had similar after a trackday.
Found the thread on another forum where it was discussed about my exhaust. Most people thought it was either cats gone or engine running lean. Pic of exhaust tips: Image Unavailable, Please Login
The inner pipes are the bypass pipes, so they are not going through the main cats. I think this normal.
We just happened to talk about this the other day with Massimo (Ferrari engineer and technician + F1 Mechanic with MS) White exhaust pipes means too too lean and you will burn out your valves. The perfect running engine has black on the inside with some grey on the edges.
+1 ..... on a race car without cats ...... this is true .................. but on a catted street 348 ...... it is most likely degradation, leading to ultimate death of the cats ....... Roberto will not see a CEL because the 2.7 motronic does not have 'post' cat o2 sensors.
If he only sees that small amount of white after a spirited high speed run, and *not* during ordinary cruising, it's no cause for alarm.
while changing my headers, I noticed that all my exhaust valves were white and the inside of the headers had a similar white residue. No white in the exhaust though. from all my research, i determined that it is normal.
Whenever I tune my 308 (no cats) to pass emissions every year my pipe tips look white as a ghost, but when it is tuned to run best the tips are never white no matter how hard I run it. I have my car set up at about 12.5:1 a/f at WOT, but when passing emissions it is around 15:1.
....... never a 'cause for alarm' ....... if it is a normal condition, there is no worry ...... if it needs new cats ..... replace them ...... no worry again ........ *
White residue was fuel additive deposits, I thought, coming from incomplete combustion or cat conversion. New cats on the horizon, I feel. Take this as an opportunity to install and better exhaust system and gain some performance.
Just looks that way, it is NOT close to the tail pipe but thank you for your concern Bingo that is exactly what I have the Hyperflow cats. Oh thank god Yep thats what mine look like just not as bad lol I don't think I am as spirited as a driver like Sy .
