OK guys, I said I would report on changing my gear oil from the redline ns to the redline superlight weight shockproof and OMG! I change the oil, I started the car, within 30 seconds I attempted the dreaded 1st-2cd gear shift and "poof" it actually shifted into second without any noise, grind, or anything .... just a smooth shift! I tried it again ... and agian and it only got better as the car warmed up. I have to say that this has to be the best mod I have ever done to a ferrari ... and it only cost $25.00. Now I did not add the modifier yet because I wanted to try the shift without anything else ... so I am wondering if I really want to add the modifier. Also, I noticed that the gallon jug of gear oil had clumps of goo on the bottom ... not sure if I was suppose to shake it up first or what. I did notice a little something different when shifting ... I can not quit put my finger on it yet. All in all best mod to date for the 348
BTW those high rpm shift ... 7kish ... just push in the clutch and shift ... no slight grind ... just a smooth shift ... I did not know that a ferrari could ever shift like this
LOL, you are too weird! You are so amazed when we give you a tip that works out! LOL (Of course anything that comes from a Stooge is suspect anyway) I am very glad that this has enhanced your drive. It was the very first thing I did after getting my car and I was kind of stunned when I saw how pricey the oil was. After a few drives, who cared?!
No kidding!! When I changed the lube, it was as if I'd changed the gearbox, as it bore no resemblance to the ill-mannered, reluctant device that was back there before. I agree, best thing I've done. I had a few emails questioning the lube change, and one pointed out the existence of a filter on the gearbox. Anybody have any info on this??
I still have a couple of question 1) What will the friction modifier do for me if I add it? 2) should I have shaken the gallon jug and got the goo from the bottom into suspension before adding it? I will take the car out for a longer run today to see how the "hot oil" normal drive is ... but as someone stated above, cold oil shift ... you would think I put in a different tranny.
If it is like the 348, it will be 4 to 4.5 litres Check your owners manual and it will tell you how many litres you need. cheers
It is the yellow fluid, and I put one gallon in ... 3.78L, however I am not up to the full mark ... about 3/16' below ... I wanted to leave room for the modifier.
pretty sure blue is the lightweight shockproof red is heavy shockproof yellow is super lightweight shockproof
Here is the link to where I got mine http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140329094787&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT It was at the buyitnow price ... so I would imagine you could buy it for the same price ... and quick delivery.
In fact I will probably buy another one at that price for back-up. As for day two with the new oil ... running perfect. The normal operating shifting does not to be a smooth as when it is cold (wierd) ... but still much better than the redline ns. Mind you, I still need to add the modifier and probably another .25 liters of superlight weight to top it off at the right level.
Bump on What is the benifit of the modifer ... I could only guess from using the search that it is for when people have chatter.
No, not really in my case. It is so things get a little more slippery. I read a lot on this board before adding it and I believe it was a good choice. Here is the link to RedLines site and the tech on the modifier. http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=41&pcid=4 --Mike
UPDATE!!! After a few days of increadible shifts ... I decided to take the plung and add the modifier. BIG MISTAKE for me! My slight synco gring is back ... maybe not as bad as with the redline ns alone, but nothing like the superlight weight shockproof alone. Looks like I'll be investing in another gallon or so of redline supershockproof lightweight and changing the tranny fluid agin next week ... live and learn!
How many miles on your transmission? I'm betting it helped mine due to the high miles. Mine felt better with modifier....hmmmm. --Mike
Guys, i drift my 348 (and 2 twin turbo 300zx's). I've tried most of the gear oils out there, and tried them hard. From my firsthand experience, go with the blue. The cold temp 2nd gear shift is just as good with the blue as with the yellow, yet the blue offers more transmission gear protection. Don't use any modifier. Don't mix the gear oils. blue is the lightweight shockproof yellow is super lightweight shockproof Blue yields great shifts in my 300ZX's and in my 348.
