Just heard on the news that a transporter carry classic cars from London crashed on snowy roads near Putlitz Germany this morning. It's difficult to see but it looks like amongst the cars inside were a Daytona and 2 Enzos which apparently were heavily damaged. http://news.de.msn.com/kurznotiert.aspx?cp-documentid=150341711&page=4

VNK 1J Chassis number 13775 is one of only 530 Series 1 365GTB/4 Daytonas built with the originals definitive Plexiglas nose. This exceptional car is supplied with a virtually unbroken line of history from its original order by Rob Walker in November 1968 via Maranello Concessionaires. The latters records confirm that Daytona chassis number 13775, together with Dino 246GT chassis number 01136, were the 1970 Earls Court Motor Show cars, which is supported by a letter from the original owners family, contained within the fascinating history file. On 30th October 1970 the car was registered to Ralph David Ltd, of Potters Bar, Hertfordshire and in 1971 was sold to Hexagon of Highgate Ltd. Hexagon was noted for its contacts within the world of stage and screen, and the Daytona was bought by legendary T-Rex front man Marc Bolan and used by him and his wife, June Feld. Anthony Wolf Motors, of Northolt, Middlesex purchased the Daytona in 1973 and its next private owner was Terry Nichols. Between 1975 and 1987, the car formed part of the Yoshida collection in Japan. It returned to the UK in 1989 and since then has been owned by (respectively) Philip Spani (1989), Paul Vidler (1991) and Martin Dawson (1993) before coming into the vendors possession. While in the current ownership, the car has been the subject of a complete and thorough mechanical restoration, including a recent (September 2008) engine and gearbox rebuild by Rardley Motors at a cost in excess of £40,000. MoTd until August 2009, the car is offered with FIVA passport, an original handbook and Motor Show official catalogue, Swansea V5 document and a comprehensive history file containing the original order and numerous service invoices and expired MoTs. A previous (2006) Tour of Spain competitor, this Daytona is also eligible for the Tour Auto and a wide variety of similarly prestigious events worldwide. Given its early Plexiglas specification, Motor Show status, celebrity associations, exceptional provenance and excellent driving characteristics, this Daytona stands head and shoulders above most other examples currently on the market. 13775 70 365 GTB/4 Daytona Earls Court Motor Show Car Rosso Corsa/Beige Daytona Seats Black Inserts RHD UK Plexi ex-Mark Bolan 28.10.09 - RM Automobiles of London Auction Lot 250 Estimate: £125,000-£150,000, VNK 1J, GB. The Daytona presented here, chassis no. 13775, is a desirable early example, one of only 530 of the first series cars fitted with the distinctive Plexiglas nose, as opposed to the later front-end treatment with retractable headlights. These early Plexi Daytonas also featured a slightly different interior, with a 1960s-style wooden steering wheel. This particular car has an extensive history file and a virtually unbroken chain of ownership. Originally ordered by Rob Walker from the Ferrari factory via Maranello Concessionaires in November 1968, records confirm that it was presented to the public at the 1970 Earls Court Motor Show. In October 1970, the car was first registered to Ralph David Ltd. of Potters Bar, Hertfordshire before being sold to Hexagon of Highgate. In 1973, this Ferrari was sold to the front man of the rock band T-Rex, Mark Bolan. Bolan, whose band recorded such famous songs as Get It On and 20th Century Boy, was a famous pop culture personality in London in those days and a pioneer of the glam rock era. In a letter to the current owner, a friend and business contact of Dennis Lewis, who owned the car at the time, recalled the day that Marc purchased the car from him: It was a cold day and Marc came down from his apartment with his partner, June (Child), to inspect the car. Marc was dressed in very thin silk trousers and silk shirt and obviously feeling the cold. June sat in the Ferrari. He said, you look good in it and the deal was done. I advised her at the time that she would have great difficulty driving the car in her 6-inch platform shoes, the fashion at the time. We then went into the reception area where Marc made his cheque out to David Roy Motors for 8,750.- (GBP) and signed it personally. We then went up to the apartment for coffee. I remember being impressed by the gold and silver discs which he had displayed on the walls, recording the success of his various record sales. According to interviews with his wife June, however, Marc never liked driving and avoided taking lessons. Since June was the one who sat in the car, its quite possible this was a very lavish gift for her. The car was then sold to Anthony Wolf Motors, Middlesex, who in turn sold it to Terry Nichols. It was then exported to Japan where it joined the respected Yoshida Collection. After the ten years spent in Japan, it was imported into the UK in 1989, going through three documented owners and finally being purchased by the vendor. In its current ownership, 13775 has been subject to a full mechanical rebuild by marque specialists Rardley Motors. The current owner spent over GBP 40,000 on this work, of which the supporting documentation is in the cars file. It has been driven less than 1,000 miles since the rebuild, and to ensure that the handling was perfect, the owner brought the car to Bob Houghton to have some work done on the suspension as well. The history file that accompanies the car also includes photographs of the car taken in a London mews in the 1970s as well as the FIVA Passport, original handbook, official Motor Show catalogue and many invoices for the work that has been carried out in recent years. In its current ownership, the car has taken part in many historic events such as the Tour de España, where RM had the pleasure of witnessing the car perform faultlessly. Chassis 13775 is a very desirable Plexi Daytona that has been well maintained and cared for. It is ready to be enjoyed with the added benefit of having Earls Court Motor Show history and celebrity ownership. It is surely one of the best Daytonas available. Edit/Delete Message
