Hello !! As you all know we´re doing the major service on my # 76407 TR. We have seen valve clearence and now we want to take the water pump out to see what we need to do on it. Can you please help us on this procedure? We still have the old cambelts in place. The front cover has to come out? The damper´s screw, does it unscrew to the right ? Any other special details we should be careful with? Thak you for all your help Vitor
You will need to remove the timing belt covers to access the water pump. There are 2 nuts that secure the water pump. Remove these and CAREFULLY pry the pump off. Be extra careful not to scratch, nick, or gouge anything...I can't stress this enough! Also....do a search of past postings about water pump rebuilds. Learn what to expect before you dig into this. The parts and procedure are simple, but to do it right so that there are no leaks later on....requires attention to detail. The harmonic balancer bolt unscrews counter-clockwise (looking at the front of the enigne). Try to pull the balancer off by hand, before using a puller to do it.
"The front cover has to come out?" ~ For the water pump - pull the cam belt covers, set #1 at TDC, then pull the belts and then the impeller cover. The damper´s screw, does it unscrew to the right ? ~ Presumably you mean the tensioner.... regardless, as I recall, all the threads you will be working on are standard clockwise to tighten. Any other special details we should be careful with? ~ Once the belts are off - do NOT turn the crank. Seemingly an obvious thing - but an easy 'oh ****' if you suffer brain fade. ~ use locktite and MINIMAL (AKA 'barely even snug') torque on the cam belt covers as you eventually re-attach them to the rear black plastic panels. The black plastic is super weak. ~ Do NOT set valve timing with the factory marks - get out the degree wheel even if the marks are SPOT-ON. ~ Pressure test the system after the new pump seal is installed. It needs to be 100% leak free before your motor re-install. Best Luck, Vincenzo
Hi , Thanks for your help! The cover that i talk about is the big cover with the crankshaft seal bearing on it. The cam covers are already out. Here is a photo of my engine as it is now without the cam covers Image Unavailable, Please Login
No you do NOT need to remove the engine front cover. Per your picture, you already have access to the water pump. If / when you do plan to remove the camshaft timing belts, be sure to lock down the cams and crankshaft into place at Top Dead Center. Do you have a Testarossa service manual?
Hi Carguy, Thanks for your reply. Yes i do have a Testarossa service manual. We thought we needed to take the engine front cover to have access to the water pump bearings. All the best
