If anyone is interested this is how to rebuild a 550 waterpump. This pretty generic for any pump. Cost using OEM Ferrari parts less than 200 bucks. Teardown is reverse of build. Exploded parts in pump

There are a number of ways to drive the bearing into the case. The bearing direction is front to back. There is a lip inside the case housing that prevents the bearing from moving out the back. You can press the bearing in the case, tap it in with a hammer, or heat the case and work the bearing in. Toaster oven works fine to heat the case and a 1/2" drive socket works great to drive the bearing race into the bore and keep pressure off the shaft.

This is the bearing seated through the sealing ring. Since the sealing ring sits above the floor of the case you can press the bearing right into the case and support the sealing ring so that when you press the bearing in you do not blow out the seal. Support the seal where you see the screw driver blade.

So then with the bearing fully seated you use snap ring pliers and replace the snap ring. That prevents the bearing from walking forward.

Really excellent description and photos FBB.

Did you do this as part of routine maintenance, or did you have an issue with the pump??

The parts used to be several times as expensive as they are now. We used to do it only when needed but with the parts being so cheap recently we do it at most majors.

    Hi

After loosing some water from the cooling system, i found a leak at the waterpump.
If the gasket package inside the pump is bad, does the pump loose water through the small hole beside the plug at the bottom side ??? Is this correct ?

My impeller has only 7 blades, yours at the photos have 9 blades and another design.
I have the first series of waterpump.

OK, now i have removed the water pump, i will do the little work more and change also timing belts and the other belts.

    Daniel

Dang! Wish I'd thought to search for a thread like this before buying the full pump @ $700.00! Oh well, I'm in the process of doing a 30k service on my car. When looking at the new pump I bought from Ricambi, I notice that the pulley is a bit larger than the pulley on the pump I've already removed from the car.

Anyone know if there was a change in original vs replacement pump pulleys?

You may have the 102mm pulley on the new pump instead of the 93mm.

The 102mm pulley came on the early cars, then somewhere during production of the 456's and 575's, it appears Ferrari put 93mm pulleys and new 8 vane impellers (old ones were 7 vane) in the pumps.

If I were you, I'd put the old, smaller pulley back on the pump.

Rebuilding a waterpump is not for everybody. Pete broke a bunch of seals before getting his right. Sark spent lots of time also sorting his. Both could have bought perfect off the shelf units and been fine. Sometimes your cost savings evaporate when you just learned you worked for $3 bucks an hour. Each does this hobby to their level. If you bought a new pump and your life is easy good for you!
