I only know of michelotto making a few for the group b cars but they sound great if you have a hopped up engine. I have seen a few vids of non michelotto cars with them but who knows wo makes them.

Do you think some cars just have the gears in stock tranny changed to straight cut dog gears?

We have a lot of engine mods available to us but what about gearbox mods?

yeah I've thought about it ... I figured I'd only be building a few for myself ... if you're seriously interested PM me.

    cheers,

    Sean

edit: the stock box is good for pretty significant hp from what I've seen ... it's the wear of the synchro's on a track car that would make a dog box make sense :).
Frank Capo (Modena Engineering) in Australia has a gear set available if you just want to write a check :) ... six speed with no reverse :).

You can combine straight cut gears with synchronizers, but not sure you can do it on a 308 transmission. Muncie did it with their M22 rock crusher in the Corvette. Practice your heel and toeing and double clutching for straight cut gears and no sunchronizers.

To bad someone couldn't come up with a substitute set of syncros at a lower cost then the OEM.

That'll be fun. There's also a set of quick change drop gears available. I have a set of Modena's straight cut drop gears with a couple different ratios but not the super trick "7 ratio" setup that he makes.

Regarding different gear ratios are you hoping to get in the box while it's in the car? I would really like to be able to do that like on some of the P cars. I need to do a 3rd gear synchro and would like to try and do it with the engine in the car. I think if I jack up the motor I can get the shift rods out and then get the 2-3, 4-5 clusters out of the box leaving the main shafts in the car ... I think? I was hoping to not disturb the shift fork alignment but I don't think it will be possible to get anything out without removing them. If I can get the third gear synchro out it means a person could change 4th and 5th pretty easy 'cause they're not machined on any of the shafts ... 1,2,3rd have one of the gear profiles machined on the shafts.

    cheers

edit: Clicked on the link ... if you get prices from PPG please share ... I think Modena's setup which I'm sure he could make just a 5 speed to keep reverse was $7-10k Australian. Do you do your own gearbox work?

I just don't think there's enough of a demand ... plus I don't think many people would trust an aftermarket synchro. I've thought about it but I've got a pretty good supply of synchro rings right now and they're not too pricey. Also, if you'd consider an aftermarket piece, there's a pretty good supply of low wear used pieces out there. Wouldn't be worth doing it if you're doing it for a living 'cause the labor, but for a track car that your beating senseless it's the way I roll :). The synchro clearance is easy to measure for overall wear but it's also important to check for evidence of heat on the i.d. .. the surface will become discolored and if it's got real hot some of the ridges will begin to tear off.

    cheers

All the box guys have pretty much the same prices locally, if you wanted another option

    http://www.albinsgear.com.au/media.php

does some discount with quantity....somewhere around 5 or 10 gearsets minimum from memory. Most of his production is directed towards the US off-road scene, so small run jobs would take a little while I'd guess.

Yes the parts are impressive, no intention to knock your work, after all in a round about way I already have some of your group iv bodywork (bought from Morten) ready for my project car!

May come knocking for some gearbox bits, depends what the spend on the rest of the project comes out like.....
