It has been a while since a clean 911S landed at our door. I am hoping someone can get me a better idea on current realistic sales and not just silly asking price numbers.

The car came to us several years ago originally from the RIAKA Fashion Museum Collection which we broke up.

It was originally an April 1973 911S Pure Euro Model. Options were Auxiliary Heater, Sports Seats, Head Rests and Retractible Seat Belts left and right. AC and no radio or sunroof.

Original colors were Ossi Blue / Black. At 77-78K kilometers car was disassembled to bare tub, dipped, stripped and repainted silver. Original interior refitted and car otherwise completely restored.

All matching numbers and Porsche Heritage Letter.

Past two owners spent $30K on services and maintenance over past thee years and today car has 83K original kilometers.

Perfect paint, perfect mechanics, perfect panel fit.

I should be posting photos on Monday of this week but as of yet do no know what real selling prices are as I am thrown off by what seem to be very unrealistic high asking prices on cars that do not really seem to ever sell... Just get re-listed again and again.

    Cheers,

    Bill

    Hi Bill.....

Hope all is well in your world !!

Personally speaking from first hand experience, but without present day comps to post for backup, if I wanted one of those bad enough it would have to be virtually perfect and original (as repainted in Ossi Blue again) and priced at <$50K to even begin to get my attention.

I know what you are saying about prices too, you've got to exclude the Richard Sloan's of the world, as well as the Panorama ads from the older guys trying to cash out for retirement.

I recently sold the car linked below for $58K USD about a year after my client pumped some $140K into building it.......sure, it's not a real "rS".......but I have always found it hard, if not impossible, to find buyers willing to pay top dollar for perfect, but older (pre impact bumper) regular production street 911's in the Porsche world.

    FWIW........YMMV.........

    Good point gumbajv.....

I should have said that my client's car went to NY and the vast over whelming majority of serious inquiries were Euro based. Most everyone from the US was wanting to pay half of what it sold for..........

Would probably be worth more in original ossi blue (seems like all early 911's get resprayed in silver in order to be less interesting).

But, if the original interior is in nice condition, and the bare metal strip is documented, and it's good original metal, I would suggest closer to $70-80K.

I think Paul Russell's unrestored, low mileage '73 911S went in the low $100Ks last year, but that was in its original color and IIRC had under 30K original miles.

Many kind thanks to all that assisted. The car was posted publicly for sale earlier this morning and now already appears to be spoken for with two back-up buyers standing by.

Here is a link to the full sets of inspection photos for those interested:

    http://www.symbolicinternational.com/detail-1973-porsche-911s-coupe-used-6690391.html

The link will stay up and active for the next few weeks unless the dealer buying it asks us to remove it.

I can email reference photos privately as well even after the link is taken down.

Next to arrive in a few weeks will be two RS 2.7 Carreras... more on those when I can.

Again my thanks to all... always,

    Bill

:) I dunno what Richard smokes, but I'd sure like to have some of that.

    Dale

PS In fairness, I sold a car to Richard. I have never tried to buy one.

It is very nice. I love those sport seats.

What is the deal with the A/C?

BTW, the S engine in my car is 633 0695.

Many people are not aware of that fact. It is a very nice engine in the last year of the small bumper longhoods.

Add in attrition do to accidents and rust... and how rare these cars are really comes into play rather quickly.

Freon is no longer allowed in many countries and the compressor was updated to a modern ammonia type system during the car's restoration. A rather nice update as it blows frighteningly cold when engaged which is rather un-Porsche like to say the least.

Not sure where this one will end up this time but if it goes to a warm climate, the new custodian is going to be rather fortunate the car has such an AC system.

    Cheers,

    Bill

I abused this sites rules and system discussing a car that I was going to sell. I have learned my lesson and am only responding to this thread to tie of any previous loose ends.

The car was sold through ebay. In fairness to the new buyer, only the buy it now price of $89,000 can be quoted. It is safe to assume he paid a small bit less but not by much.

Going forward, access to my data base, notes and photos or historical assistance is always provided for free.

Anyone however who actually wishes to buy or trade machines with me needs to contact me privately off site.

I learned my lesson and will respect the rules of this site carefully going forward.

I enjoy contributing here and learning from the esteemed members and have no interest in risking that again.

    Cheers,

    Bill

Market extremes indeed! I was at the Desert Classic Palm Springs event this past weekend put on by Paul and Holly Merrigan. Fantastic event and I suggest everyone who can, try and put it on their calendar for next year.

My family and I arrived on Friday afternoon and we checked in at the rather nice La Quinta Inn where the event is held. I took my infant son for a nice swim despite some howling wind and a fair amount of rain at times.

While swimming, i met a rather nice local man and his wife. They were from Santa Barbara and celebrating their 45th Anniversary. Cars came up as they often do and he told me they were moving permanently into an assisted living home in the Palm Springs area and he was going to sell his "Sports Car" a silver 67 911S which he bought new in Hollywood. I told him I would be interested to learn more about the car and the next morning before leaving on the rally we struck an easy deal at his price of $50,000. (That one will be a keeper until something more interesting comes along.)

I was judging cars at the concours on Sunday afternoon and during this met another very interesting gentleman showing an even more interesting BMW 2800CS with more than 400,000 miles on the clock. A fried of the family was there and we chatted about originality, mileage and time on old classics. He related that he reluctantly agreed to part with his 67 911S coupe with 149,000 original miles just a few weeks ago to the shop that serviced it for the past ten years when the owner offered him $125,000. He had special ordered the car new, took delivery at the Factory and then after a holiday had it shipped to the States. Never painted, engine never taken down and nothing but frequent services to mark all those miles.

A $75,000 swing in values on two very similar production cars is a market extreme in my book. Timing they say is everything but such examples are quite out of the ordinary in my experience.

I learned a few weeks ago of another single owner 67S back east in storage still with its original owner. I wonder how many such machines are still that way and it seems a bit odd that the three recent ones I heard and learned about were all 67S models.

    Cheers,

    Bill

I think early Porsches are hot right now -- probably because they're very usable classics.

Can't go wrong with a non-rusty early 911 at this point.
