I was leaving the reasturant and the engine started to pop. Then the car started running rough then it would bearly run. The "check engine" light came on then the car must have a siren in the dashboard and it is loud. I looked at the engine and saw smoke, alot of smoke, I shut her down.

Sad about the car but I was impressed by the dealers response. he called back within seconds. After I hung up my cell phone the flatbed truck was calling me and he was on the way and there within 15 minutes. The car is now at the dealership and it maybe a few days days before I know what happened. It is still a new car and under warrenty. I must admit I am amazed by the dealers quick response.

Oh well life goes on :)

They agreed to sell my ZR1 for me and they have an F40 I want to look at again. Maybe with some thought I can get into it.

Gosh, Lee. That's a rough turn of events ... just when you were starting to like the car too.

Keep us posted with the root cause once your car returns from the dealer.

1st... Glad you were not on the freeway when this happened! Glad you are ok!

2nd... Not surprised at the dealer's response, given the 458s history of burning to the ground I'm sure Ferrari would airlift that car out of the public eye to avoid any more egg on their face!

3rd... If Possible I Would Total The Car!!! Smoke Damage + Melted Electrical + Any Other Damage + Now It Has A History= NO RESALE VALUE!!!

    All the best!

I was at the ferrari dealer today. The cause was a rubber hose that failed, it sprayes oil on the engine causing the smoke and electric sparks. The good news is the oil is from a blowbye breather and was not a large quanity of oil. Most importanly the crankcase oil was not depleted so the engine did not zeize. I should have the car sometime next week.

The dealer said there is a service bulletin out on these blowbuy tubes. So other 458 owners might want to call their dealer to check it out.

The repair is no cost to me. I am still amazed on how fast the dealer reponded to my fire call. A great dealer!

Thank you all for the kind words and support :)

As a side bar I finally got into the F40. It was very difficult for me. The dealer told me to stay with the 458 it is a better drive for my purposes. So it is still in Orlando Ferrari. Only 7200 miles on the clock and in wonderful shape.

The car is a 2010 I bought it october 1 of that year. The car has 2300 miles or so.

I have had no problem with the fenders as several people asked.

I am happy and relieved it was not a bigger problem with the car.

Thank you and others for the concern for my well being.

I love the car but as I posted I had trouble getting into the car. The dealer told me to stay with the 458 because it was a better drive. He said the F40 would most likely be a better investment at some point. They were 1.5 million $ now they are $470k asking.

Kind of premature to be genuflecting over the car don't you think?

Lots of minor things cause a lot of smoke.
