After 3 months of having her, my '84 left me on the side of the road. I thought I heard a bearing noise when I started it, but it went away quickly so I proceeded. About 15 miles later, I noticed water and oil temps rising rapidly, so exited the freeway and shut her down. Looked in the engine compartment and saw the belt in bits and melted rubber on all the pulleys, so called a tow truck.

After it cooled down, tried to turn the water pump by hand and it was frozen solid, so I presume one or both the bearings have gone. I haven't pulled the pump yet, but that's on the agenda for the weekend.

In looking at the Ricambi web site, it asks for an engine number for the bearings. I don't have the engine number, and don't see it in any of my documents. Where on the car can I find it? Any chance these are standard bearings and seals that the local parts store can supply?

The water pump repair doesn't look too difficult. I was about to drain the cooling system anyway because I need to replace the fan switch in the radiator and was going to replace the radiator hoses while I was there. Any other recomendations or hints on the job?

    Thanks,
    Steve

GT Car Parts in Phoenix has a kit for the WP rebuild. It includes the seal, but there are two different styles which is why they want your engine SN. I don't know where the SN is on the engines so can't help with that question.

The difference is that they increased the size of the water pump bearings from 35 mm OD to 42 mm OD as shown in the photo. The engine serial number is shown on the top of the block near cylinder #1 (the top line will be "F10..." -- this is the engine family number; the second line "*XXXXX*" is the engine serial number; but be warned that the parts information on the Ricambi site is for the euro version MondialQV/308QV only, and this bearing (and shaft and seal) change was done at different engine serial numbers for euro vs US versions -- and, per the Service Bulletin 17-3, it was done in M.Y 1983 on the US version QV so, if yours is M.Y. 1984 US QV, it should already have the 42 mm OD bearings) -- so measure the bearing OD to figure out what you've got now:

If (for some reason) you've got the older 35mm bearing size you might consider updating to the larger 42mm style (rather than just replacing the 35 mm bearings and seal) -- attached is the Field Service Bulletin 17-3 that explains the (many) internal changes (even though the two overall assemblies are completely swappable).

We've given up selling the rebuild kits for 308/328's because of the variability in all the different pumps that folks have on their cars. :(

I do have complete pumps in stock, and can certainly do an Fchat discount if you're on the side of the road with green coolant ruining your shoes!
