Hey, Not sure this is such a good idea - Confidence? Arrogance? Given the restrictions, I'd have thought they would want the all important data from their top guys..... Cheers, Ian
Suppose you can look at it two ways. Like you said, or give these guys a blast in it, in case they are needed for a quick replacement. Maybe Mclaren are confident with the basic car, and if these guys can get some pace out of it, it's a sure fire winner.
You're probably right, but he hasn't driven an F1 car a lot though, correct? I'm just a little surprised they're not at least sharing the duties - If they should top the times, all well & good but if one or other (or both) struggle the question becomes "is it the drivers or the car?" I'd have wanted a "baseline" from either race driver, then hand over to the testers. Cheers, Ian
Yes a baseline from one of them would make sense, but however as mere mortals how dare we question the high and mighty MCLAREN way of doing things...
I wonder if McLaren has the baseline comparisons between their junior test drivers and the race drivers already from their simulator. They may not have driven the physical car much, but I bet they both have way more simulator time than the race drivers. I have read that during race weekend practice sessions, the teams will beam all the telemetry back to the factories, and have setup changes and options evaluated on the multi-post suspension rigs and in the simulators by the test drivers before actually trying the setup changes on the cars at the race track.
