What are you guys with early 308s doing w/ the useless mini-cig lighter? I'd like to get a normal-size socket there to plug stuff in, but not sure what the best solution is...

Is there a simple plug-in adapter available, or do you have to take the thing out and put a standard one in?

Sources for either part would be welcome, if available.....

Greg, I feel your pain. Yeah those are some weird lighters. I mounted a standard "auxiliary socket" under the dash on the drivers left side for cell phone and other accessories. As for the one on the console, it might make a good pencil holder :)

If you mean the socket under the dash for the emergency light this is a relatively standard Euro plug - the easiest way to get one is from a BMW Motorcycle dealer or parts specialist for about USD 10 - you can then wire according to your needs

    Jimmie,
No, I meant the console-mounted cigarette lighter. I haven't looked closely at the socket on the left dash. Is that a cigarette lighter-sized hole?

There is an adapter available. I believe it is from the BMW motorcycles. You should be able to go to a dealer and get one.

There were a few posts about this in the old ferrarichat archives, but since they are currently inaccessible, it won't help you. Hopefully they will be back up soon.

Do you mean the cigarette lighter that is the euro style, i.e., You put the cigarette into the hole, then push in. If so, I had one of those on my GT4, and just replaced it with a regular cigarette lighter from pepboys. Fairly easy to do, IIRC, the hardest part was taking out the old lighter. I did it a while back, so I don't remember the details. I may have posted on it in the old archives, but alas...

It's referred to as the "Hole in the wall " style......it's the older cars only.
    That's why ya'll are confused......it's a fixed in place unit..it glows inside.

They are getting hard to find, so save it.........replacement with modern style 12V socket isn't too hard........

    You SMOKE in the car?????????

I push it first then drop the smoke in when it glows.........

If you loose a shortie in there, it's kinda like an incense burner!!!!

    Macanudos don't fit!!!!!!!!!!

You can replace the cig lighter with a conventional one.

If you want to use the accessory plug on the lower left side of you dash, it is a BMW accessory plug...it is for your factory trouble light. You can buy the light from Sodacom's...or buy adapters here:

Just go to an auto parts store and buy a replacement unit. Remove the top of the console and install. Keep the old one in a box with the removed airpumps and stuff.

    Dave,
Thanks, I'll check it out. What exactly is the factory trouble light? I see it mentioned in the manual, but mine's missing. Is it just a plug-in light (into the dash) to see things better, or is it a diagnostic tool?

I don't think it was provided with our early cars, nor was the aux. socket under the dash that the later ones had............

Somebody post a pic of the 12V trouble light...pretty underwhelming, but better than a BIC lighter, I suppose......

It's a flashlight sort of deal, with a cord, and you plug it into the accesssory plug (under the left side of the dash below the clock on my car). The cord is long enough that you can look at the engine compartment at night if you break down.

BigTex, my 77 GTB has the plug, so yours did at some point.

Yes save the lighter I just paid about $150.00 for a NOS one to bring my car up to standards. I have a question I have the trouble light but not the reusable tie wrap. If anyone has one I would pay $50 for an original one, I am on a quest!!! I just paid $100.00 for a light on ebay just to get the tie and it was a regular tie wrap the one in the above photo is the real thing.

No, it is a proprietary BMW accessory plug; hence if you wish to use that over converting the cig lighter in the console, you would need to look here:
    http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/product.asp?Item=PLUG

More trouble than it is worth in my opinion. Convert the cig lighter in your console, would be more practical.

    Birdman,
I was going to give it to my gt4 buddy who just got a car but it has a regular lighter socket plug on it, maybe for later cars without the mini cigarette lighter. My original one has the same plug as in the picture abaove. I will test it today(I still have the "wrong" lighter) and e-mail you back if you are still interested. I would even throw in the fake tie wrap!

    Rob,

I have the light and original tie wrap. Since my car is not a concours correct car, by far, I will give you the tie wrap for free. All I have to do is figure out how to get some time to come by and visit your shrine. When I get there, it is yours.

Well, I'll be dipped... Somehow I missed that little tidbit in the past! Tnx Dave! I've been trying to pick up a 2nd light cheap so I could use the PowerLet plug with a battery minder & solar cell. Twice I ended up with lights with the std cigarette lighter terminal instead of the 'PowerLet' plug.

BTW, anyone want a Ferrari trouble light with a std cigarette lighter plug? 1st eMAIL takes it for $50.

The link has just what I've been looking for, one of the plugs with a std 2-pin SAE plug. It's what I've been using with my battery minder!
