Hi, I was going through Ricambi America's web site, and I am now confused. They recommend the NGK BPR7EIX, which is fine, but then I made the mistake of opening the NGK cross ref PDF, and it had in DCPR9E. Now it seems that plug is way cooler than the Iridium version. And of course the manual says Champion A6GC (which is the same heat range as a 7 NGK, I think). Can someone help on this? Is the 7 range fine for the 512TR?
In this country I generally use 8's. 7's will be fine if you are not planning any speed runs across the outback. Those plugs have a very wide heat range.
Thanks. By the way, the car is currently running Champions A6GC. Looks like the original plugs from factory. Looking through the service history, there was never any mention of a plug change (still, it only has 25xxxKM on the clock)
ants, the BPR7EIX are a 14mm thread size, and you have 12mm thread in a TR. I use D8EIX for TR, they're about AUD$22.50 each and available from most outlets to order. I have stock though.......
yep, the D is correct. Cheers Phil. Is it worth putting multiple ground type plugs? Hope your GP weekend is going great.
Anybody found 512TR spark plug wires yet ? They were unobtainable last year. I had to have my own made w Magnacor
Ants - You are correct -- I think those plugs should not have been in that category. My apologies. The NGK site currently lists: DCPR9E and DCPR9EIX as the proper Standard and Iridium plugs (respectively) for the 512TR. They're showing 9's. I'll get the site fixed as soon as I can. Kind Regards, Daniel
The Champions were famous for causing poor idling and I personally replaced many of them on 512, 550 and 456 under warranty.
I need to get some soon as well. If it was me, the Magnecor solution would be the better choice anyway.
Thanks Daniel. But you have confused the issue even more now Now I have on one hand recomendations of using the plain D and on the other DCPR (projected tip with Resistor) I can live with or wthout the Resistor, but do I go with projected tip or not? I will probably go with 8s for the road and 9s for the track.
Champions are poision for Europas. Lotus recommended them in the owner's manual but everyone who owns a Europa who's tried them (the "7" plug) said fouling was awful. Ken
Yep, they have never worked on any car I used to own, which was a pity, because I used to get them off my dad for free.
Ants, just put the 8's in a forget them. They'll do everything you need from the car. Champions are for lawn mowers and chainsaws at best!
Yeah, Champions work nicely in those little machines, and about the only place you can find a 512TR Champion plug is at the dealership inflated price schedule. I had changed to the NGK's a long time ago, and the car immediately idled better and ran smoother. I installed the DR8EIX plugs gapped at .033. After about 5k miles of driving, I pulled several plugs, and they looked hardly used, even though I have the car tuned to the "rich" side. The plugs did NOT come with the little screw on end-caps, so I had to also buy some cheap plugs which had the caps, and transfered them over to the NGK's. Make sure the wire ends are securely seated onto the plugs after you are done.
