Can Passport or Valentine 1 be purchased in local stores or are they mail order only.

Specifically, does anyone know where to get one in LA?

    Thanks

Passport can be purchased anywhere, Best Buy blah blah blah... Valentine 1 I'm not sure of. Valentine 1 is the way to go. I have both and the V1 kicks the Passports azz.

    www.valentine1.com I believe they are still $399...

E-bay works too. v1.7 like the one I have and debating on selling (not quite ready to give it up/have come on some hard times this year) doesn't include POP capability and is more X and K band sensitive than the v1.8 which includes POP capability and is more Ka band sensitive.

You can't get issued a ticket based off POP in California, to my knowledge.

You can upgrade the v1.7 to v1.8 however everything I read on this indepth comparison says v1.8 falses too much on the band that really matters (Ka).

I'd rather false on X or possibly K with the older unit before getting worked up over a false Ka alert. You can tell X and K are the real deal by the strength of the signal, it comes in at half strength or full strength on initial contact.

    They are worth every penny.

My name is Chris, and I’m a valentine one addict.. Valentine one is the best detector I've ever had. A lot of people make claims about it false-ing too much, but after you spend some time with it, you can pretty much tell what’s a cop, and what’s not, by the "tempo?" (For lack of a better word) of the alert. It’s by far the most sensitive detector out there, most all the reviews agree on that, not to mention it’s got the arrows. Plus if you ever need to upgrade you just turn in your old unit, and a fee, and they send you a brand new one. What other radar detector company does that? I've had just about every detector out there. I always end up selling them, and going back to my valentine one. I would spend the extra money, and get at least a 1.8 though if I were you.

Your exactly right billy, against laser, all a detector does is tell you that you've already been targeted. BUT they do make laser jammers that from what I've read work very well. The one I've heard most about is called Lidatek, its 2 black boxes about the size of a pack of cigarettes each, that you mount in your front bumper, and when they sense laser, they transmit back at the same wavelength, and supposedly confuse the gun, and it gives an error, and doesn’t read a speed. They fire for 5 seconds, allowing you to adjust your speed. They then turn off allowing your speed to be checked, so that the person behind the gun doesn’t suspect anything. I plan on buying one of these after I find a ferrari that suits me. There is also an anti-laser “treatment” that you can apply to your headlights, and license plate, and any other reflective surface that makes it harder for the officer to get a reflective surface to get a good speed reading from. Ideally you would want to use these laser products in conjunction with a good radar detector.

This seems to be a very good place to read up.

Just realized I had gotten off track here, haha. Valentine one can only be purchased from their store online, all others you should be able to get anywhere, as mentioned above.

A radar/laser detector will pick up laser "splash" off other cars, but this only helps if you're in a pack of cars and the cop decides to shoot someone else first.

Call Valentine Research at 1 800 331 3030 and ask for a returned V1 and you will get $50 off the retail price of $399 and you still get the 1 year warranty.

RadarDetector.net has a lot of useful info, including reviews of laser jammers and info on a product called Veil (coating for reflective parts on car targeted by LEO lasers), which I use in conjunction with a laser jammer, radar detector and license plate diffuser.

The survey I linked to is on the Laser Veil website. ;) By itself it will not work without the additional components, naturally.

Circumstances now force me to sell my Valentine 1 v1.8. I will list it on E-Bay tomorrow afternoon if there are no takers. I need to sell it in order to cover my car insurance between contracts or until unemployment kicks in. The penalties if I default will buy me 2 new V1's plus accessories.

    PM me for more details.

A friend of mine bought a V1 off E-bay, was a bit dismayed (sp?) that it was the "older version"... which I suppose is hard to tell, as they all look like an old VCR!
    Disclaimer: I no nothing about JaguarXJ6's V1.
    They still rock!

You can tell by the shape of the detector, face, and most importantly, the serial number upgrade checker on V1's website. :D Mine is an early v1.8 and lacks the POP capability and a EuroMode which enhances ticket camera detection, upgradable for the one time low price of $75 plus shipping. Eh, no thanks.

Out here on my best friend's top-of-the-line Escort, POP goes off all the time with "falses." Usually from stores or cheap detectors emitting bad signals. I don't think the V1 will be any better at filtering POP. It would drive me nuts thinking there was a cop when there wasn't.

To ticket in California, they have to switch on the "full guns" which sets off Ka or X at half to full strength instantly. If it wasn't for the arrows, I would have went with the Escort. Knowing if they are in front, in the back, or to the side, their reputation, and durability is why they hold their value so well. Used ones with the accessories go for $300 bucks and more, which boggles the mind since you get a new one with warranty for a hundred more.
