Does anyone of a reputable installer/retailer in MidAtlantic area to istall a radar/lasar detector? I've had passport SRX installed and it was awesome. I've seen and heard good things about the K40 installed. I really want to get a built in system for a DB9. Thanks. Nigel.

Nigel, Goodman Radio, on Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA. They do AWESOME work and have done all of mine. Phone is:610.525.2836. Ask for Gary Goodman and tell him Les referred you. Good Luck. All the usual disclaimers apply.

Ditto on Goodman. They've been installing systems in my cars since the late 70's and did all of the Ferrari installations for Algar (and others) until the factory started putting radios in their cars in the 80's.

On any given day a trip to goodman will provide you a view of any number of exotics.

I was wondering, do you run it in VA, ever had any problems with the police detecting it, etc?

I think you're safe in VA if the dectector is built in...and you're able to turn it off so it's not making noise AND not visible if pulled over. But if the officer sees it...you may be screwed.

I dont belive in rader detectors. They give false protection for speeders. I think RD are made to let you know otherwise they dont do as much as people think. If they are running x ka or k then it helps a little but with lasar...no hope. VG2 immunity doesnt work all the time either. With technology growing at the speed it is, we still dont have a way of avoiding tickets.

BUT I would get a valentine one

I agree...there's really no 100% way to not get a ticket other than don't speed. Radar dectectors help but I've been without one for a few years now and have done fairly fine...knock on wood. If you speed just don't do it in the wee hours of night or morning when cops out number regular cars.

Technology or detectors are only part of the solution. The other part is "combat tactics" for lack of a better term. With the Valentine 1, for example, is immune from VG2 and the forthcoming VG4, but not SPECTRE. The tactical part is that in VA, if you have a confirmed stalked equipped with the so-called unbeatable SPECTRE, which detects radar detectors, you must shut down your detector at least 166 feet from the stalker to avoid detection. Another example, is to search as far as the eye can see for vehicles on the sides of the road that could be potential laser traps, or slowing down near underpasses and the apex of a hill....I could babble on for an hour (like who didn't know that), but let me put it this way, I have a safe driver discount on my insurance. I owe it to tactics and technology. I would not drive with a V1; it's paid for itself hundreds of times each year.

<Please pardon the stupid bragging. Hope I didn't blow my karma!) :D

I'd also recommend Goodman's. I have yet to own a car that they haven't had their hands on.
My Valentine one has saved me on a few different occasions. True, if you don't speed, you won't get cought, but it is difficult to maintain 55 or 65mph. Everytime I head up the PA turnpike I notice most tractor trailers are doing 75-80.

Les, did you get the black CGT yet?

I have had Bel remote systems in my cars for over 20 years. While a lot of folks recommend Valentine, I won't go there because the Bels have been excellent and are remotes to start and don't require modification to hide in the car. I have lived in VA for all of this time and have not been caught once by radar. I have been caught, many years ago, by a detector detector. That happened during the transition period between detectable and non-detectable detectors. Since I've installed VG2 detectors, I have had no problems even when parked alongside county or state police with active radar. In my county, Loudoun, they are all equiped with detector detectors and I've not had a problem. Anyone who says the better systems don't work are simply ignorant. The number of times I have slowed down and let the other guy zoom off into radar is numerous.

As to installation, my mechanic put the unit in my 355. I have installed in Mustangs, Tahoes, and Corvettes. The "rocket science" is finding a place to install with a clear view or a clear path thru plastic, ie: no metal. I mapped out the route for him to follow. The 355 isn't very installation friendly, which means it just takes time. He also installed a Blinder Laser Jammer which requires sensors in the grill (barely noticeable). Haven't had any results with the laser yet, but jamming is better than detection. The Blinder unit is the only one the net sites say works.

I have used stereo shops for two of my past installations with varying results. On the Corvette, I installed an Escort system which had to be done by the "professional" installer. I ended up completely redoing it. At the time the Escort unit offered front and rear laser detection which Bel didn't have at the time. Bel now has it, but it is windshield located and not my preference. plus it is detection, not prevention.

Bottom line, if you still need a shop, my guy can do the job. Let me know if you need his number. His shop is in herndon.

Thanks everyone - I am definitely going to get a system installed. I had the Pasport SRX and have had both K40 and Bel systems installed in the past and they have worked well. Certainly, a radar detector alone is not immunity but it helps, especially in VA.

I must disagree about the laser detectors. Most state of the art systems, K40, Passport SRX and Valentine (when combined with Lidatek) offer Laser shifting (scrambling) which works great and is now the primary reason to have a system. A laser detector in itself would be useless but with the shifting it works great. I have been saved more than a half dozen times in my M5 with the passport SRX shifting.

I think the valentine is probably the best dash mounted system, but its just too cumbersome, not only for the police but for the pure asthetic. C'ommon Antony, you know if Prada made a car they would'nt put a valentine on the dash, unless of course the dash was black and the valentine was red....wait maybe we're onto something. Thanks Guys. Nigel.

Prada Radar Detectors.............I know you like the sound of it as much as I do Nigel. You own more Prada than I do...maybe you can suggest it to them next time you go shopping.

If you guys are interested I can gather up a few radars and lasers and we can have a test. This would go good down at MIR for the track day. Just to see if your stuff really works. I personally don't think radar /laser jammers work but what do I know. Could be a fun experiment. Let me know if anyone is interested. This is not some sort of trap either. Example at MIR --Private property, can't issue tickets. Maybe a good clip for Exhaust.TV.

    Puff you listening???!!!!!
