    Hello people...
This came up in an other post, I seem to have a problem, but am not sure.
Perhaps it a matter of EU and non-EU, not sure.

When I turn the key both SLOW DOWN lights, the ABS and the BRAKE light up. The first only short of course.
BUT, both my CHECK ENGINE lights don't light up..

I checked 4 manuals here, the 91/92/93 and GT and all these Manuals give the same info as on my pics. (5 and 12 = check enigine = NOT USED)
Not used means to my opinion that they are not engaged...
Is it just with my car and what could I do ?

    Thanks, as ever...

So that means NO CHECK ENGINE lights huh ?
Mmm... in an other topic tmobileguy and No Doubt mention that they do light up in their cars when turning the key. The "348 price check" topic.
Let's try to see some more people.

It's probably that the other reports are for a US version 348.

thanks for the excuse to go and sit in my car!

anyway checked the ignition sequence - identical to yours, no engine check light, mines a 91TS.

I've had the car for 16 months, been serviced by the best in the business. I'm sure if something was missing or was wrong, they'd let me know.

Are you sure this light is supposed to come on when you switch on, or should it only come on if there's a fault?

They are supposed to light up. At least, that's what No Doubt and tmobile say. Let try to see some more results. By now it looks that our EU cars don't have the feature... (?)

Yep, an excuse to sit in the car was exactly what I thought.

We need someone with a U.S spec O.M to be sure, but it looks like (as 91tr points out) the Euro cars are different. This does not suprise me as US spec cars (of all makes) had 'check engine' lights long before I saw any in the UK. Probably due to the strict emission regs they have had there since the 70's.

My manual reads the same - says the lamps are 'not used'. I literally took this to mean 'not used' so have never worried about it. I'm also sure my tech would have spotted them if it was an issue.

Solves that one, Euro cars 'check engine' do not light up on start up and U.S. version cars 'check engine' do light up on start up.

Now what you should have said is that the Check engine lights are supposed to come on at 100mph+, that would have been an excellent excuse to give the old fella a good thrashing:)

Sounds like it's already solved, but my '94 Spider (USA), the check engine lights light up at start.

The Workshop Manual indicates that on the 2.7 Motronic system, the USA version has the on-board self-diagnostic feature (which uses the "check engine" lights to read the fault codes) engaged, while the European version has the on-board self-diagnostic feature "present but not activated".

Yep, that sentence in the big book solves it all.
So I don't have to be worried and we all learned something "odd" again.

    However,

Becareful that your bulbs haven't burt out, OR been removed. This is one trick for not to get a check engine light to sell a car. So to check to see if the CEL's are working go throught the procedure for pulling codes. If the lights come on then your good to go. If they don't come on then you will have to remove the console to replace the bulb/s, or simply put them back in.

I wonder if it is a simple dip switch setting inside the ECU's. The self test diagnostics are "present, but not activiated" in the Euro 348's. I would have lost money betting against that possibility. Learn something new every day around here...
