Never hurts to size up the competition eh ? Since this was near the beginnings of the race campaign for the F40 It had only raced in europe prior to this, it could possibly have been the first time he saw it...I'll say it again though, very nice person to talk to.

An untimely and early end to a brilliant driver in his own right...Says alot about Hurley Haywood and how he ran Brumos after that tragedy.

Interesting thing about that pic, is that while Haywood was a very intent observer, he must not have been too worried about it. He and Stuck went on to take a 1-2 with the Audi Quattros...however, he was obviously impressed and later drove the F40 LM with Laffite and Jabouille and racked up 4 top 3 finishes (alas, no win though).

Death, for so long was a part of motorsport. WE are VERY spoiled these days. Last year, when Michael Park died... so many were shocked that this could happen today. Virtually no rule change dreamed could've changed the outcome of that crash. My great grandfather was a very influential man in 1920's, 1930's, and to some degree 1940's Indy racing. Even among the many men he knew who died. When one of his best friends died on a dirt track in New York, he was affected him quite terribly. He had gasoline in his veins... but his wife was an "opposite" ...

One day... I will own a Porsche 956/962 .... there is so much history to these cars; while some have very little race history, or specifically, race success.... some are completely rebuilt chassis from the ground up (which became nessisary to maintain competitiveness in the early 90's against the cars like the the Silk Cut Jaguars, the Mercedes C9/ C291, Nissan RC92, Mazda 787 B etc. etc. ....

The whole evolution of the 956/962 in the privateer teams is nothing but what makes legends in motorsport... something that people who watched them race will one day say " I saw the King of Spa..." or "I was in the pits while Al Holbert told his race engineers what to do... just to see them visibly angry that he did this". I feel quite good about the fact that I had watched Michael Schumacher race.... saw the way he raced in person... but F1 is so incredibly disconnected from the fan... not like the Sportscar Group C era.

the kind of racing that took place in those days.... if only that existed today. Sportscar racing has moved so far away from gentleman racing, and more into exemplifying a manufacturer through total dominance. 2008 seems the most interesting initial field in LMS, ALMS, and FIA GT racing in years... but the results will speak the same language for the last 10 years. Some of the soul, and innovation that made competitive motorsport is long gone.

~~~on topic
Seeing either the GTE, or LM race car... feeling the electricity of the moment... the insecurities of the moment, and the rush within the crew... seeing the admiration of substantial race drivers, like Haywood.... great picture Jas, great picture
Jas.... I'm sure you have an idea..... but I was totally gutted when I had to change plans to not make it to Rennsport... particuarly with the massive focus on the 956/962.... it's hard to look at photos knowing how I was supposed to be there that weekend.... even one of my favorite cars ever made made a special appearance.... the legendary, and terribly advanced 1993/4 Allard J2X ....
Did Harry send you a copy of the email I sent him on the 959??
Ryan,
Agreed that IS indeed an excellent F40 video!
Although enjoyable and good to see again, its a REPOST though, like a lot of material appearing on F40 threads nowadays :-)
It was first seen on the USA F40 thread on July the 17th last year (post # 260, page 13).
Clearly the car used was running on open pipes!
