I'll be attending the Barber Historics at the end of next week (May 20-22). Anyone else here going?

I plan to arrive around mid-day on Friday and stay until late Saturday. Does anyone know if there are any social events planned for Ferrari owners?

(In past years it was common to caravan on Friday from the track to Mountain Brook Village for a group dinner.)

Yes! We will be there all three days. I will have a booth set up in the swap meet area...definitely come look me up. Not sure what slot I am going to be in, but look for the Magnolia Classic Motorcars tent. I will probably have mour red Alfa Spider parked in my space as well, so that should be easy to spot. :D

Count me in for any Ferrari related activities, would love to put some faces with fchat names.

No drive from the track to Mt Brook anymore.

This year that has been moved from Fri evening to Thurs evening and you show up on your own to display your car in Mt Brook Village beginning at 5:00 pm.

Apparently there were too many problems with the race cars overheating even with the non stop police escort. Too bad, that was my favorite part of the weekend.

I will be there all three days, but work Saturday and Sunday evenings and need to leave the track by around 4. Hope I don't miss anything much at that time...

Well, then they should limit it to road cars only. There'd still be a pretty good group! Maybe I'll go to Mountain Brook on my own on Friday evening.

I'll be there on Saturday in the car corral. The car corral is free this year. You can register for Ferrari but from what I am told looks like all the exotics will be together. Sending a note out to FCA members as well today. Drew

Weather is looking a little iffy for friday/saturday. Hopefully they get this one wrong. I will monitor closely and adjust plans accordingly. Don't want to be setting up a tent in the middle of a thunderstorm!

If the forecast holds, my plans would change. Instead of coming home Saturday afternoon, I'd be going on Saturday afternoon, staying over Saturday night, and spending most of Sunday at the track. I hope the lousy forecast doesn't put much of a crimp in race car participation.

Sounds like a good plan. I missed last year because of the bad forecast...surely it won't be two in a row!

As I write this, it's raining in Marietta, and apparently all the way to around Oxford, so skipping today looks like a good decision. Thunderstorms are predicted from late this afternoon all the way until about 3 AM!

Fortunately the forecast for tomorrow has improved a great deal. I'll probably leave here fairly early and be at the track by about 10 AM (love that time change!). So I'll be at Barber for the rest of Saturday and at least most of Sunday.

(A question for the Birminghamians: I'll be staying at I-459 exit 19. Any restaurant recommendations near that interchange?)

Just got back! Not as many cars this morning compared to last year Sunday, but on my way out at 11am the Momo Porsche 935 was coming into the park. The GT40 was my favorite by far (group 5 races). The 250 SWB won't be raced although the owner wants to. No transponder per one of his assistants, which is why. A red 991 GT3 will be racing in group 6. Hope more owners turnout tomorrow!

The F3000 car with the early 90s Williams livery won't be raced this weekend. I have about 200 pics on my DSLR of all the cars that went out on the track in groups 1-4 plus the GT40. I got a ton of pics of that one...

Gatorrari, as far as food options I recommend driving into bham. Try Saw's juke joint... Nice atmosphere. Post office pies in avondale has nice wood fired pizza. There is another Saw's bbq next to that pizza place, but it's not a nice place to sit down and eat. More just to takeout and go. I like Saigon noodle house down on 280 if you like Vietnamese food.

We are about to leave for the drive over. Sat out today due to weather forecast. Will probably set up vendor tent this evening if it's not raining then check into hotel. I'm a sucker for wood fired pizza so we may check the post office place out. Will be at track bright and early tomorrow!

That's not just any GT40 - that's a 7-liter Mark II! (The type that went 1-2-3 at Le Mans in '66.)

Makes sense. I asked the driver after his morning session the displacement and he paused and said 400 cubic inches. I was thinking maybe he meant 427, which is what they ran at LeMans like you said.

I can't wait to see it again tomorrow!

Glad to see the 250swb on the track this AM. Can't believe I saw that, a Britton V1000, and a B29 bomber do flybys all within an hour.

I got a ton of good pics out of the last turn. Will upload next week when back home in Orlando. Can't believe this LeMans winning Audi showed up! They're not racing it. The jet engine motorcycle sounded crazy up close.

The commentator said the Ford GT40 has a 351 engine. There was an F40 next to the museum, but I missed it. Will see it hopefully tomorrow. The brabus G700 is insane.

I brought the F40 on Saturday. Could not make it today. Great place. I bought s museum membership which let you go on the bridges in back. Very cool.

I was very surprised to see the 250 parked in the Pits. Real treat.

Thanks for bringing it out! I only saw it from across the track when I was in the paddock. I was hoping to see it today, but left at 11:30 and decided not to wait to see if it would show up. I'd love to take pics of it at some point in the future. Simon (Florida fchatter) had one 10 years ago I got to ride in a few times... Amazing car. The clutch was super heavy...

I'll try posting my photos by the end of this week. I'm going to the airport to take photos of the B29 that flew over the track again. It leaves town later today.

The 250 wasn't racing today and unfortunately the GT40 didn't go out in the morning warm-up so I couldn't get photos of it out if turn 2. Oh well...

The only Ferrari I saw heading for the track was this reproduction of John Surtees' championship-winning Ferrari 158, painted in the end-of-season NART colors. (The museum owns the original car, painted red, I believe, but considers it too valuable to run, so they commissioned this reproduction, which looks about perfect to me.)

Note in the second cockpit photo the proximity of the fuel tanks. (Like Nino Barlini says in "Grand Prix", it is like being inside a bomb!) And the size of the driver in the last two photos just points out how small the 1-1/2-liter F1 cars really were!

A couple of the more unusual sights at Barber. The first is the turbine-powered MTT Y2K motorcycle, which sounded exactly like a Bell Jet Ranger at startup, because it uses the same engine! Jay Leno owns one, and it is reputed to be the fastest production motorcycle in the world.

The other was a familiar but unexpected shape in the sky, the world's only flying (at this writing) B-29 Superfortress, which was visiting Birmingham for the weekend and offering tours and rides. It made repeated circuits around the racetrack (at some distance) both Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks for the photos. As things transpired, I actually saw very little of the on-track action. I did see the group 4 feature race on Sunday, which was a ding-dong battle, with the pale-yellow front-engined car (in the middle of the first group photo) closely beating a Cooper and a Lotus.

I left after the Sunday morning warm ups. I was kinda disappointed the GT40 didn't go out that morning when i was at turn 2 (Alabama roller coaster) taking photos. The red Porsche GT3 shot was out of turn 2. I got some great photos from that spot of the Pirelli World Challenge back in April. That turn and the final turn before the front straight are my two favorite places to shoot (the GT40 and 250 SWB shots I posted above were of the last corner).
