I'll be in Atlanta for a short, short time but may get a chance to steal away for a lunch / dinner at a local eatery. I'll be downtown (not that it means anything to me, I've never been there and don't know my way around), heard the Varsity is a "must see".

I love local eateries that specialize in regional / area foods, such as roast pork sandwiches in Philly, or Italian beef in Chicago.

Love BBQ and things like burgers or fried chicken. Don't need anything high society, good old road food does it for me.

    Any suggestions?

Varsity - sucks - awful food ... its smashed hotdogs - chili dogs, everything is fried beyond belief in old grease.... peach pie is their "thing"... I would not go.

However great BBQ at a place in Decatur called Community Q - its worth an uber to get there and back.

If you are talking about Atlanta - native food, that means Soul food - Fried Chicken, collards, mac & Cheese etc... So for that kind of food -

Home Grown is the place... ( Anthony Bourdain was here - so it may be inundated with TV foodies...
    Wisteria
    Merry Mack's tea room

These are all good Traditional Southern Food places and not too far from down town.

JCT Kitchen is a bit more up scale - modern southern food.. excellent - we go there a lot.

South city kitchen is good too -chicken & waffels... that is modern Atl soul food.

also Steam house lounge is good for sea food - bar food...in mid town.

I've heard Vortex is good. Varsity was more "just to see" but if it sucks, I'll pass.

I love soul food, so good recommendation on those places.

Sounds like Fox Bros is a can't miss. I'll be in town for a few days next week, supporting major industry convention.

I lived close to GA tech for two years, was within 15 minutes of the Varsity. Ate there once, and it took me a week to get over it. I just don't see the attraction. To me, the place smells awful and the chili they love to smother everything in, looks and smells like dog food out of a can. Ergh.

Five minutes would be all you need to see of what the Varsity has to offer...then eat someplace else.

    Have a great visit.

I don't go downtown much, but my favorite metro restaurant is Sugo in Johns Creek. Sugo

The best BBQ is at a little place in east Cobb called Righteous 'Que. Their brisket is better than Fox Bros., Sam's or anyone else. Righteous 'Que RIghteous 'Que

Community Q in Decatur hands down the best... he does beef spare ribs - the entire rib.. they look like brontosaurus ribs... they sell out immediately. pork and brisket is top notch! by far the best I've ever had... including south Ga pit bbq.

Its a hike for me to go there, but have never had a bad meal. The guy who owns it is CIA trained, - classically apprenticed worked with Gunter Seeger and worked in Europe... he knows what he's doing and does it extremely well.

definitely fox bros bbq, although it's really texas style. if you wanted ribs and more southern style then fat matts.

for burgers, plenty of choices from holman finch to vortex (kind of an experience in and of itself) and my fav hole in the wall, red eyed mule (only open for bfast & lunch).

Fox Bros is good, but everyone, including my mother who lives in NYC, has been there. And that was 3 years ago. If you want to visit a place that is trending now and hasn't quite blown up yet, I'd go here:
    1) We Suki Suki/Global Grub Collective: I always get the BBQ pork banh mi for $6 with an iced coffee. Check out an AJC article here: Take a tour of East Atlanta?s Global Grub Collective | Atlanta Restaurant Scene
    2) Holy Taco
    3) Mix'D Up Burgers

It's not bad... Lots of colleges and universities in or near downtown - Georgia Tech, Emory, GA State, etc. (i.e., young people everywhere). But, it's like any other major metropolitan city. If you can handle NY/NJ, you'll be fine in ATL. Just don't come here thinking it's Orlando or something. Be smart, look at locations on your phone, and if it seems too far to walk, just Uber it.

Agreed. Things were worse...MUCH worse...in that area prior to the 1996 Olympics. Stay in condition yellow, like a responsible person should when moving around in a dense metro zone, and you'll be fine.

    LOL!

Well, unfortunately, I didn't get to go. We had a family emergency (my father in law is in the hospital) and I had to care for the kids while my wife helped out in the hospital.

Hopefully, I get a chance to go in the future. Thanks to all for the recommendations!
