So the list of MLB players suspended has been released, and there are 2 things that strike me about the names: 1) Every one is a Latin American player 2) Quite a few are affiliated with the New York Yankees (past or present), including: Francisco Cervelli Jesus Montero Fernando Martinez Bartolo Colon (already served) Melky Cabrera (already served) Alex Rodriguez (not yet named, but expected) Coincidence? I'm a big Yankee fan, the club has always been ruthless financially, but I would think zero tolerance for PED usage (of course, I'm not suggesting they would promote or condone it).
what percentage of MLB is hispanic right now? it has to be 60-70%. so I don't think that means anything. as to the Yankees, not sure...are you implying that they are up to something, or being unfairly prosecuted?
I'm sure fans are longing for the days when they chose to believe that only Barry Bonds was on steroids. Things appear to be much more complicated nowadays.
Neither - but I'm surprised that the organization was so impacted. So you know, there's nothing they could do under collective bargaining, but I'm surprised nonetheless.
Never worked for either, but I'll bet Dairy Queen. The MLB - and other major sports - are lame...they are captive by the silly Players' Unions. I don't agree with salary caps, revenue sharing, etc. Drug testing should be mandatory and punishment severe. I couldn't care less about the Kansas City Royals' or the Seattle Mariners' ability to compete because they don't have money - the whole thing is a mess. As far as I'm concerned, every one of these guys should be banned for life. Barry Bonds too - records nullified, etc. It's a complete sham IMHO.
For once the players themselves are speaking out against it. Athletes do not want to shoot themselves up just to compete against a cheater. Who knows what human growth hormone will do to them in 20 years. We may have turned a corner. There's no support for these guys. The players union is not putting up a fight. Players have had enough.
As a Wisconsinite, the Ryan Braun case in particular really irks me. The guy straight up lied to the fans, and how many times... And A-Rod. I mean, really?! What a joke. I'm not really a fan of baseball because there is so much cheating, but it's good to see the other players starting to take a stand against PEDs.
Of the major American sports, Baseball is the toughest on drug users, which means you can be guaranteed that the other sports are worse in terms of cheating and abuse.
Yep I agree. Football and Hockey have long been "rumored" (in quotes because it's like the worst kept secret), and we all know what happened with cycling.
Zzzzzzzzzz..... I grew up playing little league baseball, going to Astros games, and my bedroom walls lines with pennants from every MLB team. Now, I don't even consider myself a fan. The last baseball game I actually watched on tv was fall of 2004 when the Red Sox won the world series. I have zero interest in the sport now... and I do watch/attend other pro sports.
What made you lose interest? Just the pace of the game or something else? I'm with you - I played and LOVED the game. I just can't get into it as much as I did then.
I remember a cold April night in the original Yankee Stadium. A-Rod hit three home runs to left and a single for thirteen RBIs that night. THIRTEEN! I now know a lot of that was fake -- gutted memory.
I had thought the same but when you look at all the players that have been suspended since the testing and crack down started the ethnic backrounds even out.
One of them, who is currently active, should be on that list. As for the others, they also were cheaters but are not Latin American.
Not my point - this list, is made up a lot of Latin American players. This is an observation, but can't be denied. ESPN even had similar commentary. Nowhere did anyone say "all Latin Americans are cheaters".
