    Hi everyone,

I would like to highlight an issue i've been facing. I've copied some movies into my pen drive to be played onto my TV.

Thing is, it world perfectly fine. But when i handover the pen drive to a friend, and he plugs it in. It plays, but with no sound.

I've tested it on my mac and TV, it's perfect. But not on my friend's tv.

Is there a solution for this?

    Thanks!

Not enough information. Lets start with these questions:

    1) Are the TVs the same brand? Model Number?

2a) What file format are the videos?

2b) Does his TV explicity support that video file format?

    3) Does he route his sound through a receiver or sound system of some time?

    4) Has he ever checked to see if the firmware on the TV is up to date? (yes even TVs have firmware these days)

    1) Different brand

    2) The format are generally VLC or MP.4

3). He doesn't have a sounds system (neither do i), it's straight from the TV speakers

    4) I'm not too sure about this. However, some of the videos can be played, with sound. Some still can be played, minus the sound...

Thanks for your help mate. Appreciate it

So it sounds like there are differences between the files that are able to play the sound vs ones that can't.

Minor differences in bit rate, sampling rate, number of channels, etc in the audio stream encoding could easily cause these issues. When encoding the .vlc and .mp4 file formats, the users have a number of options that can be adjusted in order to maximize quality of the file or maximize space savings.

Likely, his TV doesn't support as broad a range of audio formats that your TV does. You can check for a firmware update to see if compatibility is improved, but I wouldn't count on it.

Thanks brother. Just to point out, his TV is 'lower range' compared to mine. Hence the difficulty i suppose. Thanks again.

That is certainly a plausible explanation.

    No problem Remy.

The fix is easy! Tell him to go buy a better TV!

Get some encoding software and change the file formats and see if that works? See which movies work, and try to convert the non-playing files to the most basic version of the format that does work?
