why is only option a WiFi connected AirPort Time Capsule?

why can't you do a backup on hard connected remote drive?

    You can do that.

I just plug in a USB external hard drive, go into Time Capsule and select the drive, then let it do it's thing. I turn off Time Capsule and unplug the HD.

it isn't giving me the option, I know it sees it because in the backup ignore list it shows the remote drive.

ok, I started if from scratch and had the remote disc already plugged in, so it brought up. unfortunately it wants to reformat the entire disc, so I can't do it with my prior backup already on there.

Hmm. I'm pretty sure mine has other (non-Time Machine) stuff saved on it.

Maybe just buy another external HD? They're pretty cheap now. I guess it depends on what size you need.

I guess my prior format before the other stuff was the wrong format for it.

FWIW, mine's a RAID array, connected via Firewire - Works a treat, but IIRC, Time Machine insists it has it's own partition, if not the whole drive.

Maybe add another partition on your existing drive and let it use that?

    Cheers,
    Ian
