I have put this drive together for anyone that wants to use it. It is described in more detail in the attached pdf file, but the route is generally southwest of Fort Worth. It will take 2-3 hours from the start point to the end, depending on how fast you want to drive. There are at least 250 curves and interesting places to see. It starts on I35W south of Burleson and ends in Glen Rose. As an option you can return to DFW through Granbury and Cresson (Motorsports Ranch). I have included some restaurant recommendations at the end and there are several places to make a pit stop along the way. I hope you enjoy the drive. Jerry Webber Image Unavailable, Please Login
I can't see the attachment. I was out that way this past weekend with fellow Porsche enthusiasts. Some nice back roads in the triangle defined by I-20, US 377 and US 281. Lot of fun. We ended up at Hard Eight in Stephenville. Good bbq...T
If you got to the Loco Coyote, bring your appetite. Their portions are huge. Great place, I highly recommend it.
OK, now I can see this on a desktop. Definitely, keep it under the speed limit in Rio Vista. My wife got caught there, ramping up her speed on the way out of town before the official marker. Only ticket of her life. Jerry - have you made this tour in your 456M? T
tomc I am sorry you had trouble downloading the pdf instructions the first time I have driven it with the 456M (several times) and with my wife's SC430. I also had a couple friends drive it in their civilian cars to try to eliminate any confusing instructions. Hopefully, there are not any glitches. If anyone finds a problem with the instructions, please let me know, and I will make a correction. Thanks, Jerry
No worries. It was likely a tapatalk/iphone issue. Worked fine from from a desktop. I'm more familiar with the roads north of 377, so this will be a great addition. Thank you for doing this...T
Update to the route instruction No. 3: Instruction No.3 states that there are two derelict Porsches. One of the Porsches has disappeared. There is only one Porsche parked under a tree in the front yard of the house. Jerry I have updated the instructions to reflect the change. Image Unavailable, Please Login
^ I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to do this in my Cali until I get a few more miles under my belt, but if any DFW F-chatters would be interested in a weekend group drive, this would be fun. I have driven some of these roads with local Porsche and Benz enthusiasts. Very nice. Would be fun to discover a few more. Full disclosure - I tend to keep it annoyingly close to or at the posted speed limits! The local LEO's in that neck of the woods seem to be enthusiastic, zero tolerance sorts, as my wife found out near Rio Vista...T
Because of a temporary road closure due to high water at Instruction No. 9, please make the following notation to the tour route. This will reduce the tour distance by about 20 miles. UPDATED TEMPORARY TOUR ROUTE 1. Do not follow Instruction 4. Disregard Instructions 4 through 10. 2. Stay on HWY 174 (go straight) and continue through Cleburne on HWY 174. 3. Stay on HWY 174 to Rio Vista. 3. Restart your tour at Instruction 11 in Rio Vista at the intersection of FR 916 and HWY 174. (there is a stoplight at this intersection) I will update the instruction when the road is reopened. Have a terrific day, Jerry
THE ROAD AT INSTRUCTION 9 HAS BEEN REPAIRED. Cheryl and I drove the complete route today. The original instructions are back in effect. The road at instruction 9 has been repaired, and there is no need to skip from instruction 4 through instruction 10. All of the roads are open and in good shape. It is a fun drive. We also ate at Hammond's BBQ in Glen Rose on the way home. Always good BBQ. Jerry
Tom, this would be a great tour for your California - let me know and maybe we could put together a small group. I also have another tour SW of Ft. Worth over some some of the same roads - similar but different. Leo
Hi Leo... Count me in! Just back from our first road trip, and ready for more. Next month is somewhat busy for me, but with enough warning I can make it. Maybe we can ask DFW FCA to spread word? T
Seems like a nice route, will probably try it once I get a better car suited for actual driving. However, a stern word of warning if you decide to go to Glen Rose to eat at any of the places listed - it is a speed trap. If you have no front plate, or are going 1-2 over the speed limit GRPD WILL pull you over and will likely give you a ticket for anything they can find. Same can be said about Joshua, Keene, and Rio Vista. Heck, a Joshua cop pulled me over for 47 in a 45 once, I'm not kidding.
UPDATE: I have updated the driving instructions for this tour. Note regarding original instructions: The two Porsches noted at Instruction No. 3 in Joshua TX have both disappeared. This drive is a fun day trip on some great north Texas scenic and curvy roads. Have a terrific day. Jerry
This drive southwest of Fort Worth is still a fun couple hours. Glen Rose, Meridian, Rio Vista, Lakeside Village, Iredell, Walnut Springs. It takes a little navigation to follow the map, but has some interesting roads and sites. I hope you give it a try and enjoy it. Hollywood and Vine in Glen Rose has closed, but Hammond's BBQ (check their schedule) is open. Jerry
Thanks Jerry. My grandparents used to live at Chalk Mountain, Some nice roads north and west of there.
Jerry, I’m down here in Walnut Springs. You can mapquest “Molnar Ranch” and we will come up. We’re right across from Flat Top Ranch. Lots a great twisty back roads here, but there Is a lot of construction on 67 right now, so watch your paint! Luckily, the 328 has a nice, but not perfect, paint job right now. It’s been nice weather down here for driving (minus the rain of course). I think I passed the Porsche group and a couple F-Cars the other day when I was headed to the airport in my 911 on 67. Cheers Dave
Jerry, If you ever make this drive on a weekend, LMK... I would love to follow you through the route on the motorcycle, I am building up my endurance for an upcoming Big Bend trip! Steve
I drove the full route this week. It was all good, except the intersection at 203 and 67 has some construction and is a little steep, but OK at an angle. It appears the DOT is going to widen Hwy 67 from Cleburne to Stephenville, or maybe to Mexico someday. My wife and I have driven Hwy. 67 from Presidio, TX, to Sabula, Iowa, but not in the F-car. Hwy. 67 end to end. Sabula, Iowa, is the only island town in the Mississippi River. The only way off the island is back on Hwy.67. I always like to drive through Iredell and Walnut Springs. It is a little like the old west, but close to home. You can also detect that it on the north end of the hill country. Maybe, we can get together for BBQ at Hammonds, or wherever, someday.
