This explains why in Christie's catalogue of the Monaco auction the car was given serialnumber "0306TF".

    Hi Bart,

    We discussed this before.
From the history of 0304TF and 0306TF Quintano´s car should be 0306TF, the Bonomi car... that´s my opinion.
Of course I am open to read different opinions.

    kind regards.
    Cris.-

Cris thanks a lot, I just sent the owners of the car this pictures to let them decide when will I post what I found, for sure there will be lots of controversy, because in our case we also have 2 different numbers, maybe Giovanni or Giuseppe had to much wine with the spaghettata that day.
Would love to read the opinions of the specialists about this number.
Cris could I post these numbers in my forum with the credit to Bart?

You sure can! Note that the numbers have a very different type font and certainly have not been stamped by the same man on the same day (despite the quantity of wine)!

Christies Geneva 22 May 1997 had the car as 0304TF in the cataloque. The Christies guys were not amused when I suggested the car was more likely 0306TF.
Does anyone know what type of chassis frame these cars are supposed to have, flat or bend-up rear end?
    Regards, Bart

Bart thanks a lot, once you see the numbers you will realize why I mentioned the wine, I see something under the exhaust too or it is just my idea?
    Thanks again Bart

Yes, there is something under the exhaust! But I have no idea what it is. It is 13 years ago and I did not see it when I took the picture otherwise I would have investigated further.
I sent the pics in 600dpi to you gmail address.

After using some paint remover and a wire brush we ended empty handed, we were authorized to remove by torch the left engine mount for the Chevrolet 350 engine, again empty handed ( I asked several times where to look exactly) then we went to the other tube an BINGOOOO we had a number this time, although not the one I expected.
Expecting all kind of remarks, will wear a turtle shield and a big :)
    to be continued.

Thanks Bart I am posting a zoom of the photos that you sent me.
According to Barchetta 0304 and 0306 had both numbers, with this find I beleive that the 3 625 TFs had a common number that is 0304, hope we can get to the end of this story.

PS wonder what is under the exhaust.

The 304/306 stampings certainly look more genuine than the 302 one.I suppose there may have been slight lettering differences in the stamps used at the time. Yes let's have some of the experts way in. What ever, this is a rare oportunity that doesn't come up often these days to see three s/ns being uncovered. Keep the ball rolling here. Thanks to everyone involved. just one man's opinion tongascrew

Some additional information: According to the marvelous book by Cris Berschi on the Argentine Ferraris the last argentine owner of 0304TF, Ernesto Dillon, sold the car without engine to Italy around 1962 to bring in a Ferrari 250 GT, whereas the last trace of 0306TF was also in Italy when the car was used by Bonomi in some italian events never to return to Argentina.

    Thanks Boudewijn for your comments.
That´s what Dillon Jr. told us but at that time he said he had no pictures, etc.
We must have to believe him.

Does anyone know who manufactured or supplied Ferrari (or was it Gilco?) the original serial number stamp dies used on the early chassis? I'm wondering if a forensic look at the characteristics of "genuine" serial numbers with the exact same period tooling would help shed light (or help confirm) which chassis is which. Perhaps even in other non-Ferrari Gilco serials?

Please pardon me if I'm watching too much "CSI". I'm just fascinated by this mystery!

I have said it before and will keep saying it: there are far more renumbered/double numbered cars out there than many people realize. It will also be very difficult - or even impossible - to fully understand how the numbers of these cars were rotated. There may be too many moving parts in this puzzle. It would, however, still be very interesting to find out if there is yet another stamping under that exhaust.

Without Branko we would have much less information. Well done!

    Best wishes, Kare
