Finally got the shaft removed today and as suspected... Damage has been done. Loose nut, damaged teeth and splines on the sprocket and shaft. Anyone who has parts for sale? Looks like summer is already over.. :-(

People have very successfully just welded those together.

Next time someone is tempted to side step the clutch they should expect this to happen.

Worn through the hard facing from bad oil. What kind of oil do you use and how often do you change it? Also, how many kilometers on it?

I keep seeing pictures of gears like these here and there is no need for it. It is poor maintenance. Service cannot be approached the same way as with a Dodge truck. They really do require different care whether people want to believe it or not. I am curious what all the other gears look like. You may be in the market for a complete transaxle, not just a gear and shaft.

Yes. I'll have to inspect the rest of the gearbox. It has 78.000km. It had this rattle noise when I bought it. I put on Omega 690 oil. It is gl5/6. Impissible to make gearchange when cold but like a dream when hot. With good protection. I used this because I heard the bad noise. The old oil was bad looking... I have used the car only 2.000km... And didn't want to drive it like that anymore.

    Which shaft do you need?

    Ferrari 348, Mondial T - Gearbox Mainshaft , 1st Gear / Reverse Pinion # 138531 | eBay

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ferrari-348-Mondial-T-Gearbox-Mainshaft-144861-/121611318229

Also, there are several gearbox parts listed on ebay right now. Plus a complete gearbox as well (plug & play or for parts?)

94 Ferrari 348 TS gearbox, 5 speed manual transmission 41k miles | eBay

The seller of the GBX is very reputable, I've bought many Ferrari parts from them including a spare GBX for myself.

Rattling isn't unusual. In fact Ferrari has fielded that complaint for a very long time and led to some changes in assembly methods in 360 and newer transmissions. Stand under a hot and running 355 sometime. You cant hear the guy next to you it rattles so bad.

GL6 is an obsolete spec and if that oil really is GL6 it probably explains the shifting issues.

That is not very many miles. Sorry to see it but really needs to be a lesson to those that still think they can be serviced like a Toyota.

I've been talking with a guy here in Norway who actually had a new shaft made to him. I guess more of us would be interested if he had a lot of them made?

Your problem is the gear. The mating gear will probably look no better. Before spending any time looking for parts, look at the rest of the transmission.

That complete 94 transmission is out of an SS. Did they have a little different gearing? I suppose it's got 41k miles on it too so it might be just as big a gamble depending on how it was cared for.

I can only answer based on what I've read and found... that the later gearboxes faired better then the earlier ones. Those in the business of repairing the 348 will have more info.

But yes, without looking inside, it could be a gamble at those miles. Although $4k is tempting.

If you open the rest of the box and see no pitting the issue is excessive contact pressure pitting due to the miss-alignment of gears. When you hear the noise the lock ring is not tight and the gear moves on the shaft. That will cause focused contact pressure on gears that can exceed the surface hardness of the gear. This miss-alignment can get so bad that it effects the lower drop gear and the pinion damaging the bevel pinion gear or gears as the next links.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking on the price too. I'd have to look at my old spread sheets but I'm pretty sure I sold the 348 transmission I had for $5900 a couple years ago. It had 22k miles but I sold it for that without even trying, I didn't even have it listed anywhere. Just got sought out.

Pricewise, it's unfortunate that Tommy is in Norway. Also note that the eBay GBX includes the clutch pack, flywheel and its housing.

I bought a the same package from the same eBay seller, but mine was from a 94 Spider with 16k miles. It cost me $4500. with free shipping.

Got a new (used) gear on the clutch shaft. Loctite 660, and some welding for security on the nut. Two gear oil changes. A really hard testdrive and all noise and vibration in the gearbox is gone👍👍 Thanks Bruce for sending me the gear![IMG]
