After 3 years of happy and issue free ownership I have encountered my first problem. A couple weeks ago I was driving around in 5th gear with no problems and the car instantly dropped to 2nd gear and the F1 light started going nuts...talk about ruining a good day. Luckily I was close to home and got home with no problem without going past 2nd.

The car will only go into neutral, 1st, and 2nd. Once this happened the speedometer started bobbing up and down like a fish had been caught on a bobber. This all seemed to happen within a mile of bottoming out where road construction was being done...but perhaps that is just a coincidence.

I have searched and found one thread (see below) that sounded very similar and want to know if this is the preliminary diagnostics I should start with, or any other thoughts you might have to help me get her back on the road.

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

Your favorite parts supplier. Everyone has different vendors they like.

You also might want to check engine mounts and the actuator to frame clearance.

When this happens hit both paddles back to select neutral, then hit the up shift paddle it will select the appropriate gear and you can limp home. It will let you downshift but not upshift.

These speed sensors are dying now that they are pushing 20 years old.

A good suggestion. But a bouncy / dead speedo is pretty much the give away. Dave is spot on, replace the sensor.

Everyone with the sensor issue, when it went bad, do you remember if you could go through the gears with the key on position? Or would/should it still give issues since it's not reading the speed correctly?

Its likely out of calibration. Without an sd or galileo this is a educated guess.

Have you tried in auto mode?
