458 has been my favorite car since it was introduced. Ive been thinking of italia vs spider for while now. I love convertibles but I track car and like looks of italia so its a tough decision for me. But luckily for me im a slow decider because I was just invited to test the 570 spider. Im not a mac fan but checked it out anyway.

Very, very impressive. It basically takes all the things I love from cars ive owned and puts it in single package. Comfort and quality of my panamera. Handling and steering feel of my gt3. Power of my gtr. All in the style of my elise scaled up to full size. Exhaust sounded pretty good too.

458 wins in the motor department hands down. The revs and sound is no contest. But the rest goes mclarens way. Then add in new car warranty and ability to order your own spec and its over. Plus I believe carbon mac will be more rigid as a spider on track than 458. Used 458 would have to be about $50k less to get me back. I would like to try one on track though since ive read its a little trick at the limit.

btw, 720s is absolutely magnificent! Sooo much better in person than pics. hardly even notice weird sockets either. Launch edt available to buy off floor for $360k. Why wait for 488 when this is right here? Only issue for 720 is 570 spider for 150k less with open top. 720 needs spider soon

For a spider a carbon cell is definitely an advantage; the 458 Italia / Speciale and 488 GTB prove that for a closed body a cleverly engineered aluminium design could be more or less as efficient as carbon but for an open top there is no way the aluminium construction could come close to carbon in terms of weight and stiffness.

seems way to answer this question for sure is to head to vegas. rent 570 and 458 to lap back to back on track. for about 800$ can get answer as to which i enjoy more. not too bad when spending almost 1/4 mil on a car

Had a friend that had a 11 458 italia for a few years and traded it in to spec a new 570s when it first came out. He only kept it a year. A few months ago he traded it in for a used 458 spider for the reasons you liked the 458. Msrp was 220k for 570. Trade was 165k. Everyone is different but the 570s is faster and handles better but lacked visceral excitement to him.

wow thats a powerful endorsement for 458! im little wary of taking used car to track so new 570 spider is attractive. will need to do back to back to tell. both great cars

I drove this last week and fell in love. It was brilliant on so many levels. The Macca depreciation tells me to buy a used one in 2 years. I think the 570S will be 125 and the 720S less than 200. That will be a wiser decision for me. But boy was it ever tempting to stroke a check!

    btw...I loved the doors! :)

I think spider will hold its value very well. Its alone in the market without any real rivals. Very different from coupe. Regardless, my intention is to buy eithher this or 458 and drive it a lot for over 5 yrs. no escaping depreciation at that point with any car

570 spider is where it's at imho. attractive price point, stellar performance, uncompromised open-top awesomeness for backcountry driving or even the track in california weather, good looks & wow, daily comfort to boot. should sell like hotcakes.

agreed, if want a spider, the mac is way to go. but if comparing coupes, 458 is probably better despite being used

The chassis in the 488 Spider is much stiffer than the chassis in the 458 Spider; it is quite close to the stiffness of the 488GTB, even with the top down. The additional stiffness of the 488 Spider chassis is instantly noticeable by anyone familiar with driving a 458 Spider. Of course, the carbon fiber tub of the McLaren is lighter, but is also more difficult to enter and get out of. Choices, choices....

yes but if youre in market for 488, then the mac alternative is 720s. no comparison imo (for coupes). 720 is another generation beyond 458/488. its more like laf to me than it is 488.

totally agreed. i've been in the market for a daily sports car, and the speciale just feels a bit of mileage wasted when it comes to the commute. i've looked hard at 570S values, and they honestly are not moving much. 911 Turbo values are dropping precipitously faster. I suspect 570 values will hold until a replacement model comes along. at McLaren's current pace, i wouldn't be surprised if that happened sooner than later though. a ever so slightly used 650S spider is the same price as a new 570S coupe at this point.

Well you have data from multiple sources. $220k sticker 570s coupe are going for 165k. I saw someone had a 255k sticker and unloaded it for 170k for a 2016.

If you want one bad enough you just have to negotiate...

570 coupe is going to take another devaluation hit once the spiders come on line middle next year. would expect private sale 2 yr old coupes around 150k. great value if you want a coupe. too bad for me i want spider which will be list for sure

2016 570S coupes should be in the 170s for all specs. The car came out like 1.5 years ago, so that's pretty much expected. Don't be fooled by the $255K spec depreciating $80K. Those cars had a dumb amount of options that would obviously be worth $0 come resale. You won't find a $210K car going for $130K. A good spec 570S should have had a $210-220K MSRP and should be selling around 170s (plus or minus a little either direction).

Prices of coupes should continue to move downward since there is hardly any reason to buy a new coupe over a new Spider being that they perform almost identically, and because the GT is a popular fixed roof model that is differentiated in looks from the Spider.

They're available on the internet. Coupes will be $150 next year. Amazing buy at that price point.

The cheapest 570S on ebay is $177K. Most are $190-$200K.

Asking price minus the discount everyone expects on asking price. No one pays asking. 5% under at the minimum. Also discounts on new cars can be gotten from dealers. You should be able to get $15K off sticker on just about any new 570S/GT.
