Just as a matter of interest, why did you paint the intake pipes red?

Sorry if that has been asked and answered before, BTW...

I saw that in the FABULOUS Official Make Over Thread for my 512TR. Many Pics! here from our F-Chat meber Silvergts1998 ! Do have a look there !

And I adored it ... copied it !

So we had two almost identical 512TR's in the world ..... until Adam changed back to oem recently ...

I am on my own with this version now ;)

    Almost ready ................ pffffffffffffffff ....!!

Just have to find a shop to fill my airco system with R134A and I still have small jobs like f.i. to install backside-grille.

What was all done the last 8 months, other than the gearbox job ?

Car was partly resprayed: .... rear bumper, cpl. right side, cpl front + bonnet + bumper.

I also now got rid of the licenseplate sticker and made mounting for the real plate (for the first time) ... and I like it !

And not to forget I installed the XENON lights ....

    And about the car? .....

The behaviour of the engine/clutch/gearbox is really AMAZING !!!!

    What did we renew ?

Cpl Clutch: 3 parts were refurbished in U.K (cheap and good) so all parts are still my old oem ones ... (now only half the pressure needed !!)

First gear set: was worn and could collapse one day ...

Crown and Pinion, not OEM (factory does not supply these parts anymore: beware !)

First piece of five U.K. made upgraded diff's (now available at http://www.forzacomponents.com/shop/article_1/Differential-(carrier).html?sessid=ZHG9Dls02hHUuN45Wzsantx2Skgoa2LrOYjBryIfaWnAXPVEkWW9H0NMORYpg2xe&shop_param=cid%3D2%26aid%3D1%26 ...)

All bearings in the gearbox (quite some money !)

Dont forget the budget of 40 hrs of my gearbox exper of bb-motors.de AKA cavallino70 here :)

And most important, I can report to you: never ever have I felt a better 512TR clutch and gearbox !

    To be continued .... ;)

    Mel,

Everything good here, Just fixed the dimmer switch on the headlights (TR foglights). When I figure out how to post a drawing, I will post a sketch of the special socket I machined to remove the steering wheel nut, If anybody has interest. Driving the 32 Ford hot rod, and the TR. working on my other 32. I retire end of the year. I have 2 motorcycles to maintain also.

More info: these things can happen in a Testarossa and a 512TR/M gearbox ...

This is a photo of the upgraded OEM diff 1994 gearbox, it's different ... not welded but forged as you can see.

See last photo: I received a photo of such a late 512Tr diff ... with wear on the sides where the bearings sit ... so this can ALSO happen ....

It may be due to wrong preload ....

It underlines that you HAVE to inspect your gearbox every now and then, at least after 50.000 kms !

Now it may be cured ... the bearing was loose and worn ...

Imagine what may have happened if it was not found ............... OEPPSS ($$.$$$) !

So, if you considder an Engine-Out .... be WISE .... ALL DIFFS can and may fail !!

Better than I have ever been able to drive and shift Fonias ...

Not strange if all bearings are new, diff is new, C&P are new and all is installed by the very best expert around !

I learnt a lot of this (not funny) adventure; if you get trouble with the gears ... it will cost you a lots of $$$$ and not to forget: nerves !

And not only that: getting all parts that you have to replace takes 3 x so much time or more as planned.

Where do you NOW get a gear set, a primary achse if damaged .... and a specialist that has NOW time for your problem ...

Learnt also that there are friends HERE that help you, pep-talk to you and keep you on the job ! Thanx Guys !!

Yes, the F factory "kindly" offered me a gb in exchange.

    Within a week you can exchange a gb for € 23.000 + Tax + shipping resulting in a frightening € 30.000 :p

Don't forget the cost of taking the engine out and in again ... plus "small money" that is then involved too ...

But then you get a gb with exactly the same weak F parts so what is now clever ? It's not the question IF but again WHEN they break ...!

Well, I can conclude: DON'T DO THAT !!

It now "only" cost me € 12.000 ... (how much is that in dollars ...) so still saved a large sum of money ! ;)

Happy that she drives super again ... hope never to have an experience like this again ....

To fellow mebers: I you experience problems with the gb, dif, unidentified, strange noises .... keep this thread alive with YOUR experiences .....

We found another 1994 512TR gearbox with quite some wear of first (l) and second gear (r) ..... and believe me, your gb can have the same problem ...

You will find that kind of near-failures only if you open the gb .... or you find broken gears too late ...

It underlines imo the importance of an inspection of the TR and 512TR gb at around the 50.000 kms ...

    Hi Melvok,
I second QP's sentiments on this thread, your trials and tribulations are not only very sobering regarding the potential perils lurking internally in our cars, but also very uplifting and informative for those of us that bash the not-too-occasional knuckles in our service work undertaken.
The reference information posted by yourself in images and technical details has helped me regarding my own investigations. My late '88 documented a diff change in '98 prior to sale(1500 Mls ago)though initially; in for a LH cover seal leak. I noticed a weeping from the RH side, and discovered the bolt/retaining washer sealant was silicon, as well as .20mm side to side movement in the sun gear. Robert Hayden was quick with a few suggestions, to which I carried out and as the attached pics show (based on your posting the images of diff carriers) I have a 512M diff installed in mine. Robert feels this is a Lotto win! and I am not one to argue with that. With an upgraded Quill shaft installed, I have piece of mind as well as a cheaper upgrade than I had planned. My thanks to yourself, Robert and all the esteemed technical minds who regularly contribute their knowledge on this site..the saying; "Wisdom is gained through many Councillors" is quite apt I believe.

Many Thanks to YOU also for adding information Wintech (whats your name friend ..) !

That is what may keep this thread alive ... so people will see it when needed !

And you are very lucky to have the right diff inside now ... lots of people do not ..... and will pay that awful price one day ...

As bonus to us all I want to show completely OFF TOPIC the photo of last Friday when my son got married to a lovely lady ! :D

With our 512TR of course ....

The motor just remains where it is and the clutch/transfer case comes off. Rear engine mount support removed after the flywheel is off and there you go! 3 hrs. Clutch replacement can be done in situ without the motor coming out.
