Like many of you, my 550 HVAC unit was looking pretty sorry for itself - delaminating, warping, etc. I recently found that Ricambi sells a replacement fascia for only $90, so I thought I'd give it a try. Here's the part:

550M HVAC Panel Replacement - FAHRENHEIT : Ricambi America

My original was pretty sorry-looking, so I had nothing to lose. Some pics of my starting point and the new part from Ricambi:

First, remove the unit from the dash. It just pops out, no screws or clips to hold it in. Make sure you remember where each knob is pointing - they are keyed to the shafts so it will make it a lot easier if you pre-align them for re-assembly.

    1. Flip it over and remove the 4 phillips-head screws (one at each corner)
    2. Pull the front half carefully away from the back half. Those 4 screws are all that hold them together - after they are removed, you're just pulling the knobs off of the shaft and the connectors from the pushbuttons.
    3. I removed the smaller two knobs first. Remove the circlip with snap-ring pliers and then push the knob out of the fascia. I used a 7mm deep socket to squeeze and push the back of the knob to allow for removal.

    4. The large center knob is removed the same way, but the attachment is much flimsier than the outer two. It would be VERY easy to break if you don't support it. I used a screwdriver to apply upward force on the boss while I pushed the knob through with the small socket. Whew!

    5. Pop out the two pushbuttons for recirc and A/C. There are two small tabs on each one. I used a tiny jeweler's screwdriver to pop them out.

    6. Now you can peel the original cover off. Since the original overlaps the edges, you will need to do some painting later.

    7. This is what it looks like with the cover off.

    8. Clean. If you've ever removed sticky surfaces from your switches, you know what to do. I used a combination of carb cleaner, brake cleaner, and panel wipe to get the surface ready. This is what it'll look like when you're done.

    9. You can see that the outer edge is clear plastic, so you'll need to paint.

    10. Mask the edges ready for paint. I chose to just paint the edges, figuring that the adhesive on the new fascia would stick better to raw plastic than paint.

    11. Paint. I used semi-gloss back, but I might use flat black if I were to do another one.

    12. When the paint dries, unmask.

    13. Remove the adhesive backing from the new fascia and carefully apply it to the panel. I lined up the bottom edge first and slowly stuck it down.

    14. The rest of reassembly is the reverse of the tear-down. I used a tiny bit of grease on the knob shafts and reinstalled the snap rings. Make sure you align the knobs with the shafts and then carefully put the two halves back together and replace the 4 screws.

Done! It was pretty simple and only cost $90. My knobs were in decent condition so I didn't mess with them, I just cleaned and reinstalled them.

Yes, well done. It's often the fiddly interior stuff involving fragile and brittle plastic that fills me with dread. This thread and a couple of others like Bryce's interior disassembly guide is really useful.

I have added this to the Installation Guides on our website, and noticed one little correction. Tom mentions:

    10. Mask the edges ready for paint. I chose to just paint the edges, figuring that the adhesive on the new fascia would stick better to raw plastic than paint.

However, you must absolutely *not* paint the full plastic cover. Only paint the outer lip, or else the nighttime illumination will not work properly. The clear plastic is important for allowing the LED's to shine into the new HVAC overlay panel. The panel is multi-layered and silver printed to ensure the lighting works correctly.

Yes, this is true. I briefly considered just masking off the area where light needed to come though but then decided to just paint the edges.

    Tom,

where did you start peeling the original cover off?
It adheres flush to the side surface of the case, so it's not easy to find a starting point...

    Thanks,
    Stefano

I started at one of the corners. Mine was pretty bad so it peeled right off.

Unless the cover is bubbled, bad like Tom's or already warped, it can be VERY hard to get off.

Stefano- Pierce one of those bubbles and that should give you an edge you can use to remove it.

Take the panel apart first, the original covering wraps around down into the knobs area and sometimes will get hung up if the knob is in the way. As Taz suggested above, carefully pierce/slice one of the bubbles areas with a razor and try to pull at the covering. It may come off in one piece or 20 pieces.

Or send it to us and it will come back like new - :D

What is the final verdict on the paint?

    a) Matt black
    b) Matt black with clear varnish
    c) Semi gloss black
    d) High gloss black

I think D is a no no but I am leaning towards B. i have the feeling that is closest to factiry finish. Am I wrong?

I would go matte black. Also, I would change one thing - after masking, I would cut out the tape from the 5 circles where the knobs and switches go. That way, the inside edges of those 5 holes get painted, too. Otherwise you can get a tiny bit of light leakage around the knobs. It's not a big deal, but something I would change if I did another one.

Thank you Mink for this input takes the guess work out.

In the instructions it says pop pannel out. Do you do that from behind or from the front with plastic thingies?
