Bought my First E-type today

    1974 E-type Roadster 4 speed V12. Purchased from 93 year old woman who bought the car brand new in London. She then drove to Scottland and around Europe, then shipped the car home. She was local and I had to be interviewed. Pictures with me and her in front of the car the whole nine yards. Clearly this car meant a lot to her. The car is in very nice original condition with 25400 miles. In 2006 she shipped the car to an E-type specialist who did over $10,000 of mechanical service stuff and a full stainless exhaust.

    I have always liked these cars and I must admit the 6cyl cars seemed to me the ones to have, but this car, the condition, the story, and the price was very right I went ahead and bought the car. I have owned MG's and Triumphs but this is a different level.

    I need you Jag guys to point me to who are the best parts providers for these and the top Internet Forums. I would assume the same thing in the Jaguar world exists like Ferrarichat.

    The rubber is a total buzz kill. The problem is you are looking at 25,000 mile unrestored car. I am afraid to change it. The other problem is I have been all over the internet and can't find anyone who has done it without major modifications. I agree 100% they need togo.

    The real shock has been the number of non-car guys that tell me this is the car that they most love if they could have anything they ever wanted sportscar wise. Never got that from any of my Ferrari's - People really do like these XKE's.

    I am really kind of like it.

    Congratulations on a beautiful E-type.

    I used to own a 1970 Series II FHC and miss the car quite a bit.
    One of the modifications I made on mine was to buy new Dayton wire wheels that were one inch wider than stock.
    Modern wire wheels can mount tubeless radial tires so I put Pirelli P4000 tires on the car.
    The combination of wider wheels and modern radial tires was a major improvement in the way the car rode and handled.
    Here's a pic of those slightly-wider wheels.

    Awesome car and story. Congratulations, Joe. I took the rubber bumper "warts" off my 993 TT and it does not seem to have affected the value, but I understand your concern about originality.

    Fun day at Joe's Garage.

    Jag was striking in person, Joe offered to let me drive it, but I declined. We did take it on a short drive around the Islands, and the torque from the V12 is amazing. Very much gentleman's car.

    FWIW I've owned 19 of the little beasties. I know, I'm sick. Right now I have a Series 2 roadster (OTS for those so inclined). They are wonderful cars. The key to ownership is to drive them. In this instance you will probably hurt the value of the car by doing that too much. If you really intend to keep the car and use it, great. If you are only going to keep it as an oddity i.e. low milage car, you may not want to hold it too long. The repairs on an under driven E Type will kill you. Brake system problems are big as well as seals drying out in the engine if not used regularly.

    They are great driving cars and love the open road. Yours has all the creature features as well being a Series 3. I hope you enjoy it. You also have a great mechanic in Savannah that can help. Andy Greene does European cars very well. Does a lot with F cars too.

    The low mile thing is a concern for me. I do drive my cars. I am happy to report that in Late 2006 she sent the car to an E-type specialist and had $15,000 worth of work done. The car really runs perfect and drives very well. I am taking it easy with her as I am just waiting for some issue to pop up. My trust level is not built up yet. With every car I get I am like that. I can say this, it likes to be driven and has such a great feel to it - very different from my Ferrari's current and past or any other car I have had truth be told.

    I also must admit that I have never owned a car that was such a time capsule. The best way I can describe it is gently used but very well maintained.

    I paid $30,000 for the car and have turned down offers above that from locals. What is the deal with the E-type market. Some of the prices I see are high as a kite and some asking prices on the internet seem reasonable. Then I look at auction results all over the map? The range is huge. I must admit I bought the car without to much research it just seemed reasonable to me, local, right in the range of what I feel I can easily throw away if I screwed up and it was in really good shape.

    So I bought it. Drove it home and the wife wasn't even mad. I did promise to sell my Alfa Spider and that left today after 2 days on Craigslist. My MOJO is on fire. I thought it would take forever to sell the Alfa and I got real money for it.

    Your car is dramatically under the money. You could kill it with that car at a good auction ( RM Monterey, Goodings etc.) That was a GREAT buy! I'll give you $35,000 right now (I'm not kidding!) But I'm sure there are 100+ guys on the forum that would do the same thing. I like the fact that it is ORIGINAL. They are only that way once. Keep it as pristine as you can. Connelly Hide Food is your friend. It's what's recommended by the manufacturer and works really well on Connelly hides. Use lots and keep it soft. The older seats wear pretty quickly if they are not kept soft.

    Very nice car....but those bumpers, what were they thinking? My tenure with Vintage jaguars
    became really acceptable when I realized and completely understood that anytime you take a road trip in a vintage jag....chances are you will be leaving it somewhere and needing to go back later and get it after repairs!!!!

    Listen to Beachmk4 - drive it. I drive mine - they HATE sitting...mine sat over 20 years (mechanics estimate) and nearly everything was rotten or gummed up.

    Mechanic replaced all the brakes, lines, rebuilt carbs, cooked the gas tank, rebuilt the rear, etc...I drive it ALL THE TIME. Resale is always something to consider - but an E-Type isn't going to depreciate much now.

    Joe wont say this because he has a shop, and is an ardent professional: but I will.

    MANY of us here will no longer do business with Andy Greene. There was a QV with a ton of miles for sale here in south GA the end of last year on Ebay. Seller mentioned Andy Greene did the work / major on it. I had Andy's shop number in my phone, and i called to get a brief history on the QV, as i had cash in hand to buy it for an agreed amount of $20k with the seller. No answer, I left a detailed message, including info that i had cash and wanted his opinion so i could go buy the car.

    Andy calls the seller, and some "friend" in Tennessee to offer a bit more: $21500.00 to screw me out of the car. Seller and I stayed in touch, and i got all of my info directly from the seller. Turns out Andy's "friend" had money issues, and made the seller wait almost 5 weeks to pay him, where as I was 45 minutes away with cash and a borrowed car trailer.

    So please dont assume those of us with exotics use nor recommend Andy Greene.

    I will not allow him to work on nor PPI any of my cars.

    EVER.

    I have had 8 308s, and a ton of other exotic cars. Locals "know" me.

    Good or bad, I speak my mind and the truth.

    Joe has a shop and a very talented Master mechanic: Corbin Burnsed, owner of Savannah Auto Repair. Doubt Joe Frazar "needs" Andy Greene for anything, but that is Joe's business.

    Very surprised to hear this. I've known Andy as a race mechanic for years and this is the first I've ever heard anything disparaging about him. I do know he has done a lot of race car stuff over the years and am truly surprised by this. He and another friend went so far as to win the vintage enduro series with HSR a few years ago.

    Well kids I can tell you one thing parts and restoration stuff is way cheaper on a Jaguar than a Ferrari. Not what I expected. I called XK's Unlimited and SNG Barratt. Bought little knobs and screws and other stuff that a mechanic would never take the time to put right. Service items are reasonable. I even ran some major repair pricing all very reasonable even cheap. You can buy just about anything for these cars. My glove box latch was broken - my fault. Brand new in box $42. But I still dig my Ferrari's - ran the hell out of 328 tonight she loved it.

    Great car. Get used to the attention, a 50 year old design and still one of the best. Much more recognizable than anything else. Biggest problem on a series III is the heat from those 12 cylinders. Cooks the accessories. The 74 had the ignition relocated to a less toasty spot. Do not make any changes that are irreversable. Keep it in factory spec and it should be great. Modification causes problems. Jaguars engineers were a lot smarter than I am. I stick to the original size tires, and if the original radio is still there and works leave it alone. I have two original paint cars that have chips and scratches and some fade but they are the original paint and they are only original once. If you have questions, JCNA has a tech line that is great ,well worth the $60 membership fee ( How much is the FCA ?). I get my parts through SNG Barrett. You are correctm Jags are a lot less expensive than a Ferrari. I had my head (4.2)and transmission rebuilt and a new clutch for for $5000 a third of the cost of a 15000 mile sevice on a 360 ( the one where they pull the engine).
    Drive it and enjoy it.
