Thank you Boudewijn!! You have made it even more complicated with that wonderful color photo. Tom Tanner/Ferrari Expo 2013-Chicago March 23rd 2013
Left to right the SN's are 0005, 0009 and 0006. 0005 in the Carrera was the car finishing 2nd with blue fenders. 0009 became the white fendered car of Johnh Fitch. 0006 was only present for the reconnaissance part. This is the port of Vera Cruz where the cars were unloaded, in this case 0006. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks to Tom and Boudewijn. Unfortunately, we still don't know what were the fender colour of the spare camera car during the race, since it seems all of them were repainted after their arrival to Mexico.
I believe 0006 was the spare camera car. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Very nice Boudewijn!! I thought it would make sense to have it Mercedes blue, but that was just a guess. I think this is about as good as your going to get Toni....Ferrarichat and many of the subscribers are amazing. Now all we need are pictures of 0592CM at Costa a Costa Mexico in 1964(off topic...sorry). I just noticed the Mercedes logo bus...Someone will have to make a model of that also I had seen the black Mercedes chase car before. Tom Tanner/Ferrari Expo 2013-Chicago March 23rd 2013
If 005 was painted blue over the original red, 006 colour should logically have changed too. In the picture with the bus it looks green doesn't it?
My customer and superb modeller José Ramón Arce has just drawn my attention to this article: Mercedes-Benz SL: sportiness in its genes | Daimler Global Media Site > Classic > Mercedes-Benz Cars > Mercedes-Benz P. Cars > SL-Class Where we can read: "Three of the 300 SL were competition cars and one a practice car that was also used by racing manager Neubauer’s assistant, Günther Molter. The vehicles were allocated as follows: Karl Kling’s car 0008 (Coupé) with No. 4 had green rhomb-shaped strips around the headlamps; Lang’s car 0005 (Coupé) with No. 3, blue strips; John Fitch’s car 0009 (Roadster) with No. 6, white strips; and Molter’s car 0007 (Roadster), with no number, had blue rhomb-shaped strips around the headlamps." So that should make things clear.
This information is conflicting with the serial number assigned licence plates of the W194 series. In 0006 it was 3146 (photographic proof of presence), while 0007 had 3784 (never seen on photo at the Carrera).
It looks blue in that picture to me. Bottom line is everything seems to point to the camera car being blue.
Yes, according to the text in Daimler's page, both Lang's car and the car with no number had blue stripes.
Some things point out towards pictures on board the ship corresponding to the car being loaded on its way back to Germany, not to its arrival to Mexico: - Right front wing repaired and missing headlight and chromed ring. - Mercedes logo instead of white roundel on the bonnet. - Exhaust stain on right side roundel.
One more photo of 0008, the race winner sent by apostolos1953. I would assume it had a blue Mercedes logo added in Mexico like all the other 300SL's in the race and green nose stripes. More Pan Am stuff, this time the 1951 Alfa Romeo 2500. This car was destroyed during the 1951 Pan Am, killing the co piloto. It seems to have been painted a very dark maroon. I have a chassis number wich I will post later. The Alfa Romeo 2500 SS was 915.805, a 1949 car. It is reported that the car stayed in Mexico after the crash and may survive. Panini may have bought the car and had it reregistered with the 153150 Roma plates. Thanks for help from iijohn. Still researching this history. Tom Tanner/Ferrari Expo 2014-Chicago March 2014

A few more photos. I really like the look of these Gordini's as they are so strange and cool looking. This T24S chassis 36S seems to have influenced the Italian designers during the mid 1950's(expermental racing Alfa's). It ran in the 1953 Pan Americana race. Also the Pan Am 1950 Delahaye. By the way, the more I look at the Provence Moulage T24S model I have the more I find wrong with it. The shape is really off. The other 1/43rd models of the car are copied from the original PM master. On to the next car and possibly my favorite car in the Pan Am. The wonderful supercharged 4 cam Pegaso Z102 chassis #0102-150-0142. The body was by Touring and the engine/chassis by Ricart, the great Spanish ex Alfa engineer(replaced Enzo at Alfa Romeo, wich pissed Enzo off and pushed him to start his own car manufacturing company). This car was crashed in Mexico and all the parts shipped back to Spain. The all white photo is of the car when it first arrived in Mexico for testing. Very fast, the car had problems running on the petrol supplied in Mexico. Any better photos you have would be most welcome on this car as we are doing decals for it.
