General Motors has more than three quarters of a century experience with these powertrains ;) Cadillac should have a leg up on the other manufacturers.

Same as Europe then ! Diesel-electric locos existed on this side of the pond from the 50s.
In the 70s, they were later phased out for all-electric once the rail network was fully electrified.

Masculine terms are being changed to more gender-neutral language in F2 and F3 with regards to the rule book.

Some changes are being made in F1 with regards to gender-neutral language.

Why Abu Dhabi is launching an ambitious new autonomous racing series
Abu Dhabi is poised to kick off a new series that is aimed at pushing the boundaries of autonomous racing which promises a ‘new era of sports entertainment’.

Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) will establish a series of high-profile driverless races at the UAE’s Yas Marina Formula 1 track using cars from Japan’s premier open-wheel series, Super Formula, which can travel at over 185mph.

The first event is scheduled for 27 April and has been designed to showcase the remarkable pace of autonomous driving by bringing together the world’s best computer scientists, coders, and developers in competition.

The aim is to reshape the future of mobility by combining cutting-edge artificial intelligence using state-of-the-art sensors and computer technology. At stake is a $2.25 million prize purse, as teams battle to make their cars faster and drive smarter than the opposition.

The A2RL concept comes from the ASPIRE group, the programme management arm of the UAE capital’s Advanced Technology Research Council.

“This is something we’re investing in for the long term,” says ASPIRE’s executive director Tom McCarthy. “There have been attempts to do this, such as Indy Autonomous Challenge and Roborace, but the big challenge is yet to be addressed.

“They’ve made great strides, and we build on their shoulders, but what we want to see is a process that’s going to be here for many years. We want something that sees through the developmental technology and its application on the road.

I think fully-autonomous racing would be pretty interesting. Highly doubt it would ever be more than a geek niche kind of thing, though.

Sounds like the kind of thing I’d watch once or twice.

F1 2026 engine regs to include 355km/h KERS-style ‘override’ boost system
Formula 1 is to revisit the driver-operated KERS boost era by allowing for a high-speed ‘override mode’ function to its energy deployment power unit map from 2026.
Matt Somerfield Charles Bradley Mar 29, 2024, 4:00 PM
    Upd: Mar 29, 2024, 4:02 PM

It was previously revealed that the turbocharged, 1.6-litre V6 internal combustion engine element of the power unit is being reduced from 550-560kW down to 400kW (535bhp), and that the battery element will jump from 150kW to 350kW (470bhp) to replace that power loss – despite the eradication of the MGU-H.

The latest draft of the 2026 power unit regulations has been unveiled by the FIA and presents some new functionality for the more powerful hybrid system to help improve the wheel-to-wheel racing.

It had long been established that there was a desire to have a push-to-pass aspect with the incoming power unit, rather than all the energy being dispensed over the course of a lap by the systems themselves.

However, the details of such a system had yet to be formally announced, and while this latest draft of the regulations doesn’t cover everything, Article 5.4.8 puts some of the framework in place.

The first portion of Article 5.4.8 creates a glide path for energy deployment from the ERS-K hybrid system up to 345km/h (215mph). The second portion covers what’s being dubbed by the FIA as an ‘override mode’, whereby the driver will be able to deploy additional power to infill the energy created by the glide path and provide a further boost up to 355km/h (220.5mph).

This secondary function will provide a more strategic aspect to energy deployment and require the driver to make a decision on whether or when to use it as it becomes available. It is similar in concept to the KERS function that F1 had between 2009-2013, with drivers able to use that energy allotment to attack, defend or deploy it for lap time improvement.

Given how much more reliance is placed on the hybrid aspect of the power unit from 2026 onwards, it means that drivers won’t always have the ability to use the ‘override’ function. And, if they do, they might risk putting themselves in an energy deficit under normal deployment conditions further around the lap or over the course of the next few laps.

Fighting with another driver in wheel-to-wheel combat will be just one aspect of how this new system will be employed by both drivers and their engineers, as they look to extract the best from the car during the course of a lap, during battles and over a race distance.

The 2026 engine regulations have attracted the most manufacturers on the grid since 2008, with the current four engine suppliers set to be joined by Audi and Ford (via Red Bull Powertrains).

As revealed by Autosport in December, the FIA will also introduce new chassis rules in 2026 to make the cars between 40-50kg lighter.

The cars will be shorter, with the wheelbase likely trimmed down to 3400mm from the current maximum 3600mm. The cars will also be narrower by 10cm, so will be reduced from 2000mm to 1900mm.

Another step change from the current cars will be the addition of extra moveable aero to help reduce drag on the straights.

Symonds promises 1,000 bhp and less downforce for 2026 F1 cars

Phillip van Osten 28/03/2024 at 18:47

Formula 1 chief technical officer Pat Symonds has offered his latest insight into the sport’s next generation cars, insisting they will be more challenging to drive thanks to increased horsepower and reduced downforce.

Formula 1 will introduce its future regulation platform in 2026, with the wholesale changes including both Grand Prix racing’s chassis rules and power unit specifications.

While the former have yet to be finalized, the latter have been signed and sealed, and will include a 50/50 power split between the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, running on 100% sustainable fuel, the hybrid system.

The unit’s more robust electrical power will rely entirely on an MGU-K component as the new configuration has been stripped of its MGU-H element.

This change has led to concerns – mainly expressed by Red Bull – that engines could rapidly run out of electrical power on the straights which in turn would limit output, with turbo lag also kicking in.

But Symonds dismissed these concerns, most of which have been addressed.

“They will be, at the moment, cars with electrical power fully delivering 900 horsepower,” he said, speaking on F1’s Beyond the Grid podcast.

“We’re going to be over 1,000 horsepower with the ’26 car, [we] want more of it coming from the electric motor.

“At the moment turbo lag does not exist on these cars because we have an electric motor on the turbo. That’s going. [But] turbo lag is not what it used to be in the old days.”

In addition to a power output boost, the 2026 regulations should see a reduction in aerodynamic downforce, along with a cutback in weight and size, changes that should prove beneficial to the show on the track.

“We do want to reduce the downforce on the car,” he said.

“Part of the reason why the cars are so heavy is because they’re having to deal with so much load, so they’ll slide a little bit more.

“I think what it will do is it will put a little bit more emphasis on the driver. That’s an important thing. It’s the drivers who are the heroes, they’re the supermen that we want to promote.

“So I think things are going in the right direction there.”
