The "lightweight" version people generally refer to is the non-a/c, non-electric window version. Like the all black, or red (really more orange/red in color) insert option, the a/c, electric windows and radio were just options you ordered. And, you hoped you received.

Understood, and yes indeed you hoped you got what you asked for.

But in order to ensure that we do not have a post-production variant of the GTO 'created' by fans, there was not an official lightweight version of the model. The options came in all combinations: for example not all non-AC cars had manual windows and not all power-windowed cars had ACs. To call a GTO without an AC unit or window motors fitted a lightweight version of the model is stretching the 'lightweight' concept a bit.
Im going to refrain from calling Miura SVs sans AC units 'lightweight SV's :)

They are a great car. I've owned, and own, lots of Ferraris, a couple of Lambos. The 288 GTO, overall, is the most fun to drive. Never overheats. It looks good. It's fast. And no silly electronic wizardry to help out the driver. Traction control, braking, stabiltiy control, etc. is all about driver input. The way it should be.

And, Joe is correct, the Ferrari factory never called the no a/c, roll-up window, no radio option a "lightweight" version. The cars, even with all the stuff, are very light. Much lighter than the fancy material cars they are producing today. All that electronic wizardry, pollution controls, safety elements, navigation systems and concert hall sound systems do add up.

    Great owner-experienced summary.

Didnt mean to give you a hard time about the lightweight thing, but you summarized it perfectly, ANY 288 GTO is a relatively lightweight car, compared to the overweight technology-laden things of today :)

Forget the driving experience, the dynamics, the handling etc...

For me, that is the best looking car of all time. And that's that.

After many attempts to get info & prices on that car, I gave up. It had high mileage (40,000+), or more clearly, high mileage by North American expectations.

    Cheers

For what it is worth, I passed the 50K mile mark on my GTO. If I didn't have other Ferraris to drive, I would have rolled the odometer over by now.

It's been a smile every mile.
