Evo have tested p1 and 918 , road and track ...
One car was faster and better built than the other from what I have been told . I hasten to add it's second hand information but from someone that was there and would have no reason to fabricate his information . Apparently a significant difference in the cars , interested to see how this will be presented in the write up.
There's a peculiar drama to this thread...mostly revolving around the P1 vs 918 and Peloton's claims in particular. If he's right, his claims will be substantiated and he ultimately vindicated. If he's wrong, they will be falsified or left unsubstantiated for so long that he losses credibility. Personally, I'm leaning toward the latter but there's certainly a nagging doubt that he knows whereof he speaks. And this compels me to check in from time to time. Good Read. Carry on.
I don't know Peloton personally but after reading so many of his posts here, and on McLaren Life, I get the feeling he knows what's he talking about, he tells the truth, he doesn't resort to hyperbole, and he doesn't try to stretch the truth to fit his arguments. So I think your "nagging doubt that he knows whereof he speaks" is probably the right feeling to have. Either that or he's just super-convincing
However, we know that you prefer the 918 over the P1 from your posts here and on McLaren Life, so let's see how this plays out. Until something is actually written up the rest is noise. As far as Erik (Pelton) the guy is extremely knowledgable and as Mark said does not resort to Hyperbole.
The 200th issue of EVO should be with UK subscribers end of next week. That would be a great way to celebrate.
I'M BACK NOW I HAVE TO CATCH UP. LaFerrari is smug at the top resting on its marque, admittedly quick but with nothing to prove. 918 is a beautiful engineering masterpiece but Porsche can only spit shine the heavyweight hybrid so much once they found out a 6:57 is not fast enough, and sitting on a dealer lot near you sort of ruins the magic... P1 is the king, the the superest of the supercars, the one which will be remembered through the ages, the one which I will lust after forever, or at least for the next decade until they bring us their next halo supercar which I will one day be able to afford... one day. Craigy out.
Damn, I skimmed through and, surprise! It's the same old, same old...but what did I really expect? Still people blabbing about McLaren's failing to release a time. If you re-hash something enough, does it become something other than hash?
Chris Harris says in his LaF vid Nice hear him agreeing on what I posted in this thread many months ago.
I would agree as well, the boost button is certainly a gimmick, although I think McLaren might agree on that, and irrelevant if you're in full power mode anyways. The DRS is also pretty gimmicky, at least it has a bit of a purpose but like CH said these cars are so fast its hard to even think about pressing a button while you are focused on driving them.
I think that hotlap button on the 918 is of similar philosophy or utility... Considering that all acceleration tests of 918 where performed in either RACE or SPORT mode, i reckon that you get the overboost function of the car (maximum battery discharge rate, maximum e-motor performance) in either of these modes during full throttle application. Either that or the 918 have even more power reserves, which i highly doubt since recorded times of 18-19sec for 0-300km/h are already on the verge of overperformance... Other than improving acceleration, i cannot understand the impact of hotlap mode. -No braking energy recuparation for better feel? -Different mapping for better part throttle response? -Different chassis and transmission settings? Highly doubt all the above...
How does a LaF stack up against F2014 machinery, acceleration wise? I wonder.... Is a drag race in order? Ferrari should put Di Simone or Benuzzi in the LaF and Alonso in the F14T and do a few laps around Fiorano at the end of this season.
I estimate the F14T could lap Fiorano in around 58 seconds or faster. The LaF is said to lap in 1 min 20 sec.
