Those are cool... They had a pin drive version for the urraco rally and a bolt on for the later gtam juniors that ran targa florio. Private teams also contracted batches of bespoke wheels for there own race teams like scuderia flippentti

.........I hope nobody will mind a slight detour.

I'm looking for a set of 7.5x14 Cromodoras or Campys, "stars" for 308GT4.

If anyone knows of any (will buy anywhere from one to five...needn't be a complete set) for sale I'd appreciate a PM.

    Thanks!

    Jack.

Jack, these are often available at reasonable valuations as many abandoned 14" for 15", eBay, if you are comfortable doing that? Aesthetically I like the 14" even on 308GTS/B, smaller wheels, balloonish tires, pure 70's!

There is a set of each (Campy and Cromodora) on eBay now, but overpriced IMO. I agree, 14" with XWX are best on these cars.

Cool thread idea, I love the 70's italian sports car wheels. Especially the gold "coffins"

Yeah, but the larger diameter wheels just don't look right to my eye. I understand the incremental performance advantage and greater selection of the 16" tires but if I were that interested in ultimate performance I'd probably be driving something else.;)

just to add the campagnolo of the Maserati QP3 (identical to the Kyalami AFAIK), and the De Tomaso Mangusta (the Weights outside the rims were removed since the photos).

My favourite are certainly the first version for the Ghibli , beautiful design but no personnal photo of them.

    I understand

I wasn't even considering the performance characteristics..............I was just interested in how great the larger wheels looked to my eye (typical designer), so there we differ ;)

And I really appreciate your perspective as a designer. For me, the look of the XWX is almost as important as the wheel.

yep those are them... very aggressive offset as you can see flares in the rear needed to house them.

that photo must have been taken in chicago?

Stumbled into that photo somewhere and saved it, love the presentation there, and WAS pursuing 7" Melbers as a result. When I discovered they required some body mods, I stayed content with 6 inchers, as my car is concours restored and don't wanna be fussing around. REALLY great design.

Can anyone identify the 3rd car in the row?

Thanks, I'll search for a better shot. Show a photo of your Mille Miglia's - certainly a looker and thread worthy! Are they indeed magnesium?

hard to tell from the straight on side view, i think those may be abarth sp type campy's found on the sport racers. I forgot the model number. the numbers were all listed on crazy Al's chart remember?

here u go... well some of vintage american ads say there was mg but i not so sure. if there is mg in it its probably wasnt much in the blend. some peeps also say bwa are mg but nothing like the amount in the early cromodora's or campy's i reckon. i had these mm, bwa wheels sitting around for over 30years and they dont fall apart like my campy's or mg-cromodoras ones. MM and early bwa's are pretty darn light for mostly a alu wheel. 12lbs for both @14x6 size. as we move into the late 70's both cromodora and bwa made the same wheels but much heavier with little or zero mg for longevity. now the melbers are way cool but they are boat anchors when it comes to weight.

here are some crusty campy wheels #40802 for a 911 rsr fitment flaking off the paint. we all guilty of calling these stunning wheels "mangusta wheels" since it was pretty much the first memorable car we recognize them on. but they were intended to be a generic racing wheel that came with a blank hub face hence the large and featureless surface in the middle for bespoke bolt patterns. before the goose, they were used on a bunch of F2, Group 6 and other spec racers. it was also the first gr4 statos wheel before notorious sexy "coffen spoke" campy's.

can you tell i have a serious wheel fetish :) ?

I completely understand, and I've stated before, one of the sweetest thing about the Alfa Romeo world are the myriad of boutique wheel designs available with correct offsets to bolt right up. Those 'mangusta' wheels have been around for sure, Magnus has them on a car or two in his collection.
The MM's are great looking, always thought they had a little 'mini' Miura look to them. Great stuff, thanks for sharing.

I like your collection.. :). Don't forget to add a few ford escort rally's wheels which have the same bolt pattern. Guys in Germany run often run the ford ronal wheels which surpringly look like a campy or the UK guys with mg minilites. The cheater horst trans am guys ran with the larger 15 Minilites

We've had the size change discussion several times in the Bora thread. I remember seeing Boras and Khamsins in 94 at the international club concours that had 18"? BBS rims adapted and I thought they looked fine at the time. But now everything is about originality.

Back then most of us wanted the much better tires. I always hated the XWXs on my Bora as they broke away in snap fashion so I was onto better performing wider 60 series tires right away and they worked really well. I liked the more aggressive look. There's nothing like that out there now ... :(

Elliot M. Siegel who is a long time and multiple Bora owner has a project to produce larger diameter Bora wheels. From the photos or drawings I've seen they look OK to me @ 17".

I can't find them in that thread at the moment.

It's a nice conservative design but certainly not my favorite design of wheel.

These Cromodora lightweight magnesium wheels were often the choice of Abarth cars. Weighing in under 9lbs. This Fiat Spider is running on combined wheel and tire weight at the corners around 20lbs. It drives like a dream as a result.
