My last 18 months active duty in Navy were at N.A.S. Alameda as legal officer and discipline officer; was also the discipline officer for Com12 - Commandant, 12th Naval District at Treasure Island. Very nearly decided to stay and settle in San Francisco. Love the Bay area.
Dean - thanks! I still have the OEM rims and will save for the next owner if I ever part with her and if they a purist. But I am not. I'm a sucker for aggressive, well proportioned wheels on a beautiful V12. The only flaw with the 456M is the stock whimpy, undersized rims and tires that make her look fat and silly (sorry, purists!)
Novitec NF2s and 18" or 19" Maranello wheels really update the look of the 456/456M, as well as improve handling and braking at a small sacrifice in ride. The latter is more than made up by the superior ride characteristics of the new MPSS tires.
Not so much a Purist comment but the original size copes very well rough Aussie roads and they are very easy to clean.
I've said this before but I'd love to get the original 456M wheels, just one or two sizes bigger. Don't exist unfortunately.
Flore, Well, money, time and your good idea are all it takes. Here's the original concept art for the rims. Someone could make them. I'd even consider as they are gorgeous. Just too small. I'm sure ferrari wouldn't mind at all. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have 19's on mine, and as they used them on the Maranello, I'm not sure why they never gave a wheel upgrade when they introduced the 456M. Lots of guys are happy with 18's though from the Maranello and other sources I'd easily grab a set of these wheels if they were produced; I bet 456 owners the world over would do so as well Perhaps we ought to look into it?? I could see one of the boutique aftermarket mfgrs being able to do this for us...
On that note, I tried photoshopping a 18-19" (somewhere in between I think) version of the original wheels onto my 456M. I just increased the rims and wheels the same amount proportionally, so it's not perfect. Needs tires with a lower sidewall / section height to work, but I can see how it might look...and I like it. Who's up for making these? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Definitely helps! I think we'll see the 456 becoming more and more popular. It's classic lines will weather time well...
After considering the stock 550 18" wheels (which were too plain for my gaudy taste ) I went with 19" OZ Superleggeras. Here's an enlargement of my avatar. Sharpened up the steering response and didn't seem to appreciably increase road harshness. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks. Cuoio wheel, dash and center stack inserts over sabbia seats, doors, parcel shelf and headliner. Carpet is match-to-sample burnt sienna.
Flore- Design owned by Ferrari. Nobody is going to make those for you. We tried to get BBS to produce more 575M 19" modulars. They said no way, Ferrari owned the design. They look like F355 wheels, which are 18" and similar design. The fronts are too narrow, though, unless you want to have them cut and a barrel section added. Rears on F&R are a thought, but I think they are too wide for the front. Would take some bodacious spacers on the rear, but even 17" F and 18" rear might look better. 456 GT/456M Five Spoke 17, 5 X 108 mm Front 8.5J X 17 ET 50 mm, Rear 10J X 17 ET 24.6mm 355 Five Spoke 18, 5 X 108 mm Front 7.5J X 18 ET 32 mm, Rear 10J X 18 ET 77.9 mm
Yes my "ferrari won't mind" was definitely tongue in cheek. With the plethora of rims out there bet could cobble something together with custom ferrari hub inserts to make look close to oem.
Here ya go. The door shot shows how the 3-tone works (or doesn't). I apologize for the industrial style plastic mats, but this is Oregon. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
