Of course you're invited, it is going to be a very good year. (Hopefully no rain). We've got a number of great things planned that we should be announcing in the coming weeks.
It was at our event a few years ago along with 4504, 4508, and 4509. It was the largest gathering of 450S' in over 40 years. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Walter, If you come to the Pocono show I happen to have a son who lives in Philadelphia which gives me two reasons to head out to the East Coast from the Chicago area. Since he loves his father but not to have me around twenty-four hours a day, it's an easy drive from Philadelphia to the show and be able to spend a great day there. I hope you are enticed to come over for the show. If you should spend a little time in Philadelphia during that time, permit me to treat you to a lovely dinner. Elliot Siegel
Hi all, I am currently restoring the exhaust system of AM109*572. I will use a Quick Silver stainless one, but want to keep the original headers. Can you tell me if they were originally painted black or silver? Which is the best method to bring them to as new condition? They are now greyish and rusty. Thank you for your help, Alain.
I do not believe they had any coating, that is the reason why they all look rusty. I blasted my manifolds and then applied Eastwood high temperature coating which maintains the original gray cast iron color. The manifold on the left has the coating while the manifold on the right is simply blasted. With proper preparation the coating holds up well. I have seen some people jet coat the manifolds, which has its advantages, but for me the look departs too much from the original. Ivan Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you for your answer, Ivan. I have never used this Eastwood product yet, but the result on the picture looks nice. I will do that. Alain.
Hi, I have taken the drive shaft apart to renew the UJs. I have 2 questions to ask: - are the screws which attach the shaft to the box and rear axle special (in high tensile steel)? - how much torque should be applied when rebuilding? They were VERY tightened. Thank you for your help, Alain.
Hi all, - Which brand is the Mistral steering box? - Is it possible to find a new one? Mine has worked on low oil level... - Or, do you know a guy who restores them? Thank you, Alain.
ZF is the steering box maker. They can be rebuilt - look for a qualified restoration shop that specializes in these sorts of car, or possible try contacting ZF Steering Box for Maserati 3500 GT | eBay or check this out... I'm pretty sure its the same box for 3500-mistral. others on here might know better
Thank you for your answer. When looking at the picture on eBay, the steering box seems identical to mine. Like you, I think that the 3500 GT and Mistral should have the same box. I have asked the question to the seller. Alain.
Hi all, No ideas regarding the grade of steel for the driveshaft screws? The steering box on eBay is already sold (see picture) I have heard that the early Maserati had Burman boxes. If that's true, it should not be too difficult to have it rebuilt in England. Alain. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Alain, I have compared the above picture of the steering box with the pictures in the Jaguar Mk2 spares catalogue: it is the same! Jaguar standard box LHD was C 14846 with a ratio 20.3:1 Jaguar special box LHD was C 8928 with ratio 17.6:1 It seems that only the "Inner column worm" and the "Main nut" are different for RHD, LHD andd for both ratios. Jaguar also supplied Inner column worm and Main nut for 15,7:1 ratio. If I knew how to post a picture, I could post the very detailed exploded view with all the numbers. You may contact Dönni Classic Car in Roggwil, Switzerland, 062 754 19 29. They may rebuild your box or eliver one on exchange, if Jaguar used the same ratio as Mistral?! Wilfried
Beautiful car! The owner of the 1966 3700 Spyder and the owner of a silver 1964 Mistral 3700 Coupe gathered in my workshop yesterday to have a look at my Mistral undergoing restoration. Great evening with great people!
Hello Ursa Major... Do you know the VIN of the 1964 Mistral 3700 coupe? I have 109.102, which also is a 1964 3700 coupe. Might be interesting to know how close they are... Mike
Hi Mike, My friend's 1964 3700 Coupe has VIN 109.218. The 1966 3700 Spyder in the picture is 109.S621. And my 1966 Coupe is 109.A1.1032. Not sure when in 1964 the coupe was built, but I can ask the owner if you like. Alex
Just when I thought I was done with major restorations, Mistral spyder #049 has entered my life. This one will keep me busy for some time. Ivan Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Oh but it will look SO good with it's matching Ghibli! (((-: Lots of pictures please Ivan. Cheers. Mark.
Except I do not think I will paint it black. It was originally red Cordova which sounds like a deep red ... but I am 99% sure I will not paint it any shade of red. I think a dark blue (Blu Sera) would look good with the brown interior. The engine sounds really good and still has the injection unit. Has not been driven in over 20 years so the first thing is to do the brakes, drop the rear end, do the front and rear suspension, etc, etc Ivan
Hi all, I am restoring one of the front floor of #572 and was astonished to see that it is built from light alloy sheet metal and riveted to the chassis members. It is so cleanly done that it must be factory original. The rear floors are built from steel and welded between the chassis members. Could the Mistral owners tell us which material their floors are built from? It seems to be different between the early 3.7 and 4.0 late cars and pehaps the Coupe and Spider too. Alain, Alain, My Mistral is over at a friend of mine's USA house unfortunately he is based in Lucern, Switzerland. Fortunately, he is coming home for a few days next week and I will prevail on him to take me to his garage and we will look at what I have under the carpets. I do know that my car, #1028, is one of the aluminum bodied car and is 4 liters. Bear with me for a week and a half and I will see what my floor boards are made of. Elliot
Just for the record, I believe ALL Mistral coupes were alloy body. Spyders were constructed with approximately 60% alloy and 40% steel (for rigidity) panels. Ivan
