So what scale are those plans drawn to, Tom ? Does each fold represent a side of A4 paper ?

Researching the history of the old race cars is a lot of fun, quite challanging, and takes on a life of its own!
In the same vein, I just spent the weekend with Bo Barnes of Troutman-Barnes fame. We found him and flew him in to get all of his memories of the Harrison Special (Lloyd Ruby, Lotus 19 Cobra Powered Special, USRRC) which I am in the process of restoring.
Funny how just when you think you have exhausted all leads, you find a new one that opens many doors. Bo's visit ends up leading us to Chuck Deigh, which leads to Dan Gurney......... all of which had a hand in this car one way or another.
The data which was in print of this car was incredible but the memories of a origonal builder that has never been questioned about the car is simply breath taking!
So many stories of customers pulling up to the Troutman-Barnes shop with new 250TR's and GTO's before the California USRRC races, and we were not even discussing Ferrari's in this visit. I can remember sitting for hours listening to F. Sicard's memories at the various tracks with NART which proved invaluable with 3223GT and Vintage Racing.
Never stop searching, there is always more to be found, it just might not be in print, YET!
    Dave

Troutman-Barnes. The list of historic cars they worked on is deep and wide.
It's great that these stories are passed on.

Congratulations on your latest purchase, Napolis! I thought one 330 P4/412 P was already incredible. The pictures of it (or should I say, her?) being loaded into the truck are amazing. I can only begin to imagine the anticipation you must have felt when you found them in your mailbox.

I look forward to seeing lots of great pictures and reading many interesting stories/discussions as a result of this.

There is one 917 that was converted for road use. Porsche did that for Count Rossi of the Martini Racing team. The funny thing is that Porsche couldn't get it to pass German regulations for registration and it has a US registration (Alabama allegedly). The story goes that Porsche got the registration on the condition of it never appearing on the road there. Whether it still has its US registration today I do not know, as I'm not very much into Porsches. It seems it's still owned by Rossi.

This page has a picture of Count Rossi driving it on the autobahn.

The real reason the Count Rossi car was titled and registered in Alabama is that in those days, you could get an Alabama title by mail. No inspection. Just tell them what to put on the title and it would be done.

Aha, so that's why they chose Alabama. I couldn't fathom what connection there could have been between Porsche and Alabama. Thanks for the information.

If the car still has the Alabama registration, would it be legal to drive the car in the US today?

Alas those days are over and a 917 would no longer be US street legal.

Not to take the thread Off topic but I was at a local car collection last night and saw a 917 and a MK IV and I can't imagine driving either of them on the street! Mr. G I have even more respect for you now after checking out an MK IV up close.

Because of their build date? Post 1968 safety and emissions rules?

I drove Sandy MacArthur's 917 once and it was almost impossible for me at 6'2" and 215. Tiny cockpit.

Yes. 1967 is the cutoff date.
The MK-IV is roomier but the P 3/4 requires narrow hips.

Thanks. I assume you saw Dr. S's Blue MK-IV?

Out of curiosity, how does NY State consider the year of manufacture of cars. Is 0846 a "1967" car to them or '66? 0854 obviously will be '67, despite its slightly older chasis.

    As 0846 is now a P 3/4 NYS considers her a 1967. 0846 was converted from a P3 to a P3/4 in December 66/ model year 67. 0846 first raced as a P 3/4 in 1967.

She arrived! I'll download and post photo's this evening.
Safe journey. She started right up. Drove her into the shop. Sal's going through her, changing her oil, and then we're going for a long drive.

She's fantastic. A few interesting things.
0846 is Def. a P3 chassis converted as per 0846's Technical Data Sheets as delineated in my 100 pages. By comparing at 0854's chassis you can see exactly how 0846's chassis was originally before it was modified and you can see the vistagle welds on 0846 where tubes were cut to accept a P4 engine.
    0854's wheelbase is 2412mm
0846's wheelbase is shortened by 12mm.
0854 has original engine stamped 0854 412P and original chassis stampings.
The tail on 0854 is a P3 Spyder tail that shows signs of accident repair. That is why she's missing lower tail lights.
The hindge points on the Spyder tail match exactly to 0846's hindges.
0854 of course has correct door bottom/front side of tail line.
0854's original tail and doors are a sight to see. Fantastic.
    0854's original doors are aluminum.
    0854's spyders doors are fiberglass.
0854 has full road gear including a handbrake and computer speedo.
    More to follow.
