The driver side door was measured carefully before it was completely dismantled. the paint was manually removed before the doors was sent to the glass blaster (Aluminum skin must be handled carefully). Amazing to see the amount of corrosion in the bottom of both doors despite the quite fine before pictures. All glass fittings was sent to either zinc treatment or re-chroming.

Someone changed the driver side skin many years ago and managed to screw up the door fit completely.....The fit issue was fixed back then by grinding down the back fins on the window frame and removing the center fin completely hereby allowing the door to close! Unfortunately this very low tech fix left out any possibility to install the small chrome list surrounding the side window. Unbelievable how these cars has been treated. I cut out the window frame, straightened it and rebuild the missing fins.

I fabricated two new bottoms with brackets for window winder wheels, a new inner panel for the driver side, one new front end outer panel and the two small brackets holding the small rubber gasket between the doors and the front fender.

I assembled the vent windows and completely assembled both doors in order to avoid any adjustments after final paint job. I can now verify what most other Dino owners already knows, the doors are a challenging and time consuming part of the car to fix.

Enjoy the summer and happy driving!

Very nice work. I had to do a fair amount of work to one of my doors and added NOS hinge brackets and skins. Frustrating and rewarding at the same time!

Thanks racerboy9. The doors on these cars are often forgotten about and corrosion fixed with patches, bondo and paint. The only way to get access to do a proper repair job or corrosion projection job is to pull the door partly apart and start from there. I can only agree with you that's a very rewarding feeling afterwards, but the time it take is unbelievable.

    Hi Peter,
Good work, we had the same issues - had to make a new bottom frame. Should last a long time now!

Thanks guys. No decision taken on color yet....I'm changing opinion on a daily basis so might go for a poll. I'm considering one of the following colors for the time being: Verde Germoglio, Giallo Fly Yellow, Argento Auteuil Metallizzato, Blu Dino Metallizzato...Any suggestions welcome.

Bianco Polo Park, or white in other words. Not really my first choice. I painted my first 911 white and that looked good but I'm not so crazy about a Dino in white.

Hmm... How many white L-series originally?
I'm sure it's in the compendium, probably rare. There was a white L-series which was in Japan.

Yeah, I like light blue or silver metallics, or a solid green, red or yellow look good on a Dino. Everyone likes yellow these days.. I joked with Rob and Paul it's the new red :)
In the end, you have to live with it but ask the other family members rather than us....

Verde Germoglio won`t be period correct, as this colour was introduced with production begin of the M-series....

Thanks Matthias. 30 white ones that's more than I thought. You are not making it easy for me....but the family has decided (=wife): It's not becoming white in the first spray at least. I have saved all the blue original interior for later re-fabrication should it become necessary. Though I must admit that I have changed attitude towards a more purist approach to originality. Had I acquired the car today I would have gone for the white exterior and kept with the blue interior, it's so period correct, but that's history....I guess I'm getting old!

I'm having a bad influence on my son as well....he has sold all his newer bikes and are now concentrating purely on old German stuff, and his only 16:

Not to make it tougher for you, but I have 00988, also an "L", also born Bianco Polo/ black. When I restored my car several years ago I opted for Giallo, as I couldn't bring myself to stay with the original color. Now in hindsight, I wish I had.

On another note, I did a sympathetic restoration on my '70 Aston Martin DBS. It has under 15k original miles. The paint was bad but the interior was good. It too is white with blue (same as yours) and I grappled with the color. I stayed original. It is really a period correct and a magnificent color scheme.

    It's a leap of faith.

Thanks for your input and valid recommendation SRAnderson. It does not make the decision any easier for me as you mention. So far I'm dragging out the decision by finishing all the glass fiber work first and painting al the internal surfaces first, but at some stage my paint shop will have to know what color to mix.....

Thanks Andrew and Rob for the nice words. I am not an expert or a professional in any way. I am just enjoying the work a lot and taking my time (And the family is very patient and understanding). This forum is another reason for my patience; it is so rewarding to get all the qualified help from all over the world and being able to obtain the goals first time (Or sometimes second time). Colors will always be a sensible topic...just like the discussions around engine- and gear oil type and length of service intervals....-:)

    Regards Peter

I have been busy the last couple of month preparing the chassis for final paint job. It's a damn trivial and hard job but the result is rewarding.
The body and chassis was cleared and cleaned from remaining paint and welding spray etc. before it was primed with epoxy. After a light sanding all the major seams were sealed and the entire chassis and the inside surface's of the body was painted with a 2K black satin automotive paint.

    Regards Peter
