Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" - as a graphic novel!

The August issue of "Road & Track" had a story about a recently published graphic novel treatment of Steve McQueen's iconic 1971 movie "Le Mans". It was created as a labor of love by Swiss artist Sandro Garbo and his studio, and I just received a copy through Amazon.

I must say this is one of my favorite book purchases in a while. The book is a 64-page hardcover of very large page size (10" x 13.5") which does justice to the spectacular artwork. The artist admitted in the "Road & Track" interview that he did take a few liberties with the story, in the mode of character development (which the movie had little of), but if you're a purist, I don't think that detracts from the book. Technically the book is very sound, with just a few very minor glitches.

I should point out that this is the first of two volumes, though the only indication of that is the phrase "End of Episode 1" at the bottom of the last image. (This part ends with the accident that destroys the #20 Porsche.) This book was apparently issued last December, but Garbo indicated that it was a three-year effort. Hopefully we won't have to wait 3 more years for the rest of the story!

If you like Steve McQueen, Porsche 917s or Ferrari 512Ss, you need to get this book. (As I've said, too bad the real 1970 Le Mans was not as exciting as McQueen's version!)
