Let him sit out 2016. Besides, there is no way he will be as good this year as he was last year, history shows that almost every player that inks a big contract falls flat after that, especially defensive players. The only ones that don't are QB's most of the time, but not always (see Matt Schaub).
This really doesn't need it's own thread. There's still 5 weeks left. Maybe he's seeing if anyone will offer him more? I have no problem with it.
Didn't know he was holding out. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000667925/article/von-miller-broncos-at-impasse-over-guaranteed-money T
It seems that Von and his agent want as much or more guaranteed money as a Boy named Suh. Pay the man.
A lot of things don't need their own thread, but then you get accused of hijacking a thread for something else... Anyway, if they think he is worth it, they can pay it, I don't think he is. Yes, he pounded Brady when New England's line was decimated with injuries, that doesn't make him the greatest ever. Folks should have learned from Haynesworth, and Suh.
let him ask for what he is worth...Wtih no guaranteed money, injury risks, CTE, etc. these guys are just looking out for their own welfare.
Exactly. Especially as I think the CTE issue and the rash of early retirements by top players has a lot of the young stars thinking they need to cash out sooner than later. But as whisky said, he needs to keep in his mind that hold outs seem to accrue serious injuries at a greater rate than others. T
In many cases including Von...the payment makes up for the underpayment of the past as well as the perceived worth going forward.
True. NFL.com said that both sides were in agreement on the overall deal, but the discrepancy was on the 1st 3 years of the deal. Von is 27. So, 3 yrs puts him at 30, which is same as as Calvin Johnson, and close to the age Barry Sanders when he retired...T
I agree with Whiskey. In most cases when a player holds out, he either gets injured or has a crappy year.
Just read the report that he turned down $58m for 3 yrs guaranteed, bc he wants $70m for 3 yrs. I'd do any job that paid me $10m per concussion
Gee, what about their teammates? That'll add to dissension in the locker room, but I 'get it'. Does anyone care about the rookie that is getting the minimum rookie contract? He can get hurt just as easily as a 'star', who is looking out for him? Two sides to this, 1) If the players don't get it, the owners keep it, and 2) If you don't ask for it you won't get it. Doesn't mean you will get it. And that is Denver's fault? Just like you or I, if we think we can make more, we ask for it, and if we don't get it, we move on. It usually doesn't end well... I have no problem with him wanting 'more', but is he REALLY worth it? Put him on almost any other team, will he do the same things? I doubt it. Will he do this season what he did last season? I doubt it, if he plays like most others in the past, we will have about 2/3rds the numbers. The NFL is a cash cow. Teams have a lot of money to spend, but with that said, do YOU tune in to a game to specifically watch Von Miller, Suh, Robert Quinn, Cameron Jordan, Ryan Kerrigan, Marcell Dareaus, Darrelle Revis, JJ Watt? Probably not. (Those were the highest paid defensive players)
Labor negotiations are a dance. My Dad was a lobor negotiator. It usually goes down to the last minute to show we fought for every penny. Elway HATES TO LOSE. (Note that he let Brock walk instead of matching Hou). Worst case is they do a one year franchise tag deal. Von takes the risk of getting hurt and missing out on the really big bucks. This is a once in a lifetime chance for Von. He has to try and leverage as much as he can NOW. Elway knows the odds of a Ship repeat are remote, even though he was one of the few to do it. No team has ever repeated without the Ship winning qb. Don't think Elway will not sign other deserving players just to keep Von...Den has salary cap problems. History says Elway will work out a deal at the last minute with Von. But he has had drug problems in the past. Stay tuned.
I thought this was interesting... https://sports.yahoo.com/news/3-reasons-why-broncos-don-t-want-to-give-in-to-von-miller-034343155.html T
It comes back to, Brock really was unproven, and definitely NOT worth what he got at this stage of the game. I said it a hundred times: Denver got to and won the SB with sub-par, or 'average at best' QB play. I am all-for giving someone what they deserve, but you would think by now ALL of the NFL would tie these huge salaries to incentives, but they mostly don't. They will never learn, but PLAYERS are, the cascade of players retiring before they turn 30 is just now starting, just wait 2-3- years.
Today Von said he would not play under a one year franchise tag. Really. If he sits out a year with no pay he'll need $72 million guaranteed to break-even with the Broncos offer...and Den will still have first right of refusal with any other offer.
$70 mil guaranteed, $140 mil total. $12 mil more than luck. Broncos offer Von Miller at least $70M in guarantees - NFL.com
