I'm thinking of bringing my family to Boston, picking up a car and driving through New England. Must be July, 7-9 days and ideally wish to stay at top hotels/resorts. Definitely not the camping types ;)

    Thanks!

As a young man, a friend and I drove through Vermont and New Hampshire (Green Mountains, White Mountains) as we took the slow way to a conference in Montreal. We even snuck into the state of Maine for a lobster roll.

We were starving students, though, so we did not stay at any nice hotels, but I can definitely recommend the scenery and roads. They were a lot of fun in a Ford Escort, so in a Ferrari, awesome!

    White mountains, some hike.

Bird watching on Plum Island (come early, bring very long lens).

Heavy metal show in the Palladium in Worchester, MA.

Time with Italian car day in Larz Anderson museum.

The idea to do Lake Champlain, Burlington, VT and Montreal is a good one.

MUST visit Stowe, VT .... entire main street on National Historic Register. Hope that VT Symphony is performing at Trapp family (yes, from Sound of Music) Lodge and don't miss it if it is. Travel the bike path. One of the most beautiful parts of the world. Lots to do and great places to stay and dine. Might also spend a day or 2 in Woodstock, VT. White Mountains of NH also wonderful to visit as is coast of Maine but that may be too far if you do VT.

Not sure which direction you are headed but i quite enjoyed Newport RI. A beautiful city as well is Provincetown. As a word of warning the city heavily embraces the homosexual lifestyle. Not much for me in Providence.

Went up mount washington which was incredible.

Spent a fair amount of time in that area recently. February 8 to 10 ill be back in MA and RI.

While Newport and Provincetown are worth visiting, your 7-9 day window doesn't allow you to head north from Boston and south as well. New England is so fabulous and beautiful and choices to visit are many, I again suggest you travel north to both Green and White Mountain regions and again, don't miss visiting Stowe, VT>

Isn't Newport and any coastal NE town gridlocked with summer traffic?

I recall that Mystic was, even back in the mid 90s.

I did this last summer, and fortunately will enjoy it again (annual family reunions in Plattsburgh, NY).

We flew into Montreal, rented a car at the airport and drove to a downtown hotel for the night (what an adventure that was!). Then drove to Plattsburgh and stayed for a few days, with some scenic drives around the area. Spent the day hiking and tubing in the Ausable Chasm too.

Not sure if it's too late, but here are a couple of shorter itineraries that I strung together for a guy from Germany who wanted to do some day trips in New England over the summer. All started from Boston, which is worth a visit on its own due to historical significance (just follow the "freedom trail"!)

    Itinerary 1: Niagara Falls
Drive west on I-90 to Stockbridge. Visit town, eat lunch at Red Lion Inn, visit Norman Rockwell museum (Rockwell is well known American Realist painter, famous for magazine covers).
Travel west through New York state, stopping overnight in Cazenovia at the Brewster Inn. Outstanding bed and breakfast with cheap rooms and right on the shores of a lake, excellent dining room and wine cellar.
Continue west, Arrive in Niagara falls, revel in tourist-y things. Take the “Maid of the Mist” boat tour
    Return home

    Itinerary 2: Maine coast
From Boston, drive north on Route 1. Excellent stops include Newburyport, Portsmouth (cool downtown w/ excellent bars and restaurants), York (excellent lighthouse called Nubble Light on Casco Bay), Ogunquit, and Wells (excellent beaches). Great lobster can be found in any of these places. Excellent shopping in tax-free New Hampshire in either Kittery or Freeport (home of LL bean). Both places have huge numbers of outlet malls. Kittery trading post in Kittery has the largest assortment of guns and hunting gear you will ever see, particularly coming from Germany where it’s all illegal.

    Itinerary 3: Cape Cod
From Boston, Route 3 south to Plymouth, home of Plymouth plantation, a historical reenactment of the location where the “Mayflower” supposedly first brought English settlers to US. Continue south on route 3 over Cape Cod Canal onto Cape Cod- stay off of route 6, instead using route 6A (north side) or route 28 (south side) which run closer to the shore. Nice downtown in Chatham. Continue farther onto Cape Cod and visit the Cape Cod National Seashore in Eastham (there is a visitors center there). Home of Nauset Light Beach and Coast Guard Beach, two of the consistently highest-rated stretches of seashore in the US. Frequent seal sightings and big surf in the water at Coast Guard Beach. Too cold for swimming any time besides August. Continue toward Wellfleet and Truro, where the Cape becomes much less populated and has large sweeping stretches of dunes and seashore. If you make it far enough, visit Provincetown- old artist colony famous for art galleries and a vibrant night life scene. Note that provincetown is also a haven for bisexual/gay/transgender individuals, so beware if this sort of thing offends you.

    Itinerary 4: Connecticut/Rhode Island
Take 128S to 95S past Providence. You can take route 4 to route 138 (to the east) and visit Newport, home of huge turn-of-the-century mansions and the sailing capital of the Northeast. Or continue on interstate 95 to the west (labelled “south”) and stop in Mystic, Connecticut, home of Mystic Seaport, Mystic Marinelife Aquarium, and many good restaurants. Make sure to visit Foxwoods Casino, located perhaps 20 minutes north of Mystic, for a true Las Vegas-style gambling, restaurant, and nightlife experience. Also some good wineries in Stonington, town just east of Mystic on the shore.

I had a nice NE summer trip a few years back. We started from New Haven, CT at our relatives' place and drove up all the way to Mt. Washington in NH (well we climbed that, but you can drive up if you want). Newport, RI was very nice...the mansions on Bellevue ave are an absolute must for everyone to see once in their life.

There is also a great car museum in Newport right on Memorial Drive near the tennis hall of fame- Audrain collection, I believe it's called. They seem to rotate in thirds between modern sports cars, American muscle, and really old dawn-of-the-auto type stuff. Last time I was there in May was modern cars including a number of Ferraris and a Schumacher F1 car.

BMW.sauber- I have a bunch of relatives in New Haven too! Wonder if they know each other :)

It is possible! They actually live in a very small town nextdoor called Guilford. Very nice town and lots of great waterfront views.
