I usually book flights to France and Brazil once or twice a year. Usually comes at around $800 per head. This year, i cant find anything at less than $1400 for Brazil and $1200 for Paris (out of Chicago).

I searched for flights in July/August/Sept even November and even March of 2018.

No major events in Rio this year, gas is cheaper than 2016 and dollar still strong so no reason for the 100% increase.

    What am i missing?

Has Brazil and/or France increased taxes on flights to/from their country for certain countries? They are not that well off financially so that would be a way to raise revenue. That seems pretty odd though.

Airfares are going up - Jul. 13, 2017

    Airfares are going up

As if flying isn't frustrating enough, airfares are going up for the first time in years.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) said Thursday that its passengers paid higher fares on average in the second quarter for the first time in more than two years. It also forecast that fares will continue to climb.

The news follows guidance from American Airlines (AAL) on Wednesday that it will report even steeper fare growth.

U.S. airlines have been struggling to raise fares in recent years, despite full planes. Low fuel costs had encouraged airlines to add additional flights. That increased competition and capacity in the system and put downward pressure on fares.

But strong demand for air travel, spurred by those low fares and steady job growth, means that airlines can finally start raising fares.

Delta said that passengers paid about 1% more to travel in the quarter, and that it expects its key measure of fares to rise an additional 2.5% to 4.5% in the current quarter.

The airline needed a boost in revenue to help cover higher costs. Fuel costs rose 18% compared to a year ago, and labor expenses rose 9% following a labor deal with pilots that was reached late last year that gave them significant pay hikes. Delta also said the April storms in the Southeast that forced it to cancel thousands of flights cost it $125 million.

The US may be higher but inside Europe airfares are just crazy.

Cheapest I got out of LA to Paris on United was $1100. Yes, its nutty. Asia is still cheap though.

Supply and demand. More people with more money means more people are traveling on pleasure or business.

Crazy up or crazy down? Within Europe I use budget airlines, mostly Ryanair and Easyjet. Their fares seem reasonable, provided booking is done well in advance.

Or crazy cheap (Ryan Air, EasyJet, etc). I cannot believe how little money I give those guys to take me tons of places during my ~6 months each year in Europe.

I just today researched flights from Krakow to Buenos Aires, round trip on Lufthansa, great connection in Frankfurt. $1300. I wrote my GF telling her the airfares are CHEAP, she should join me in Argentina this year.

How much is the alternative? Car, bus or walk to a boat. Probably a few boats.

    That's likely more money.

And WAAYYYY longer. Like a week for every hour on the plane or something.

Air travel is amazing. Ask Louie CK :)

I had a roundtrip flight from Birmingham, AL to Phoenix, AZ last month on Southwest with a stop in TX each way...it was $500 nearly on the dot. Crazy to me for that. Birmingham to Orlando (1.25 hr flight) I have to pay about $300 or so roundtrip.

$1,100 for LA to Paris sounds like a deal by comparison. :) Flying out of big cities must be nice. If my flight out of BHM gets canceled, there's nothing available the rest of that day to get on 90% of the time.

Today Ryanair published its quartely figures. Profits up 55%, while the average fare 'rose 1%' to €40. The airline predicts a price war in Europe, with fares decreasing.

To increase their profit Rayanair demands that that their pilots provide their own planes (like Uber doeas with cars.)
