Hi Guys Can anyone suggest a mid priced restorer? I have just been quoted £17k to restore my car to showroom, but that is not what I want. The bottom of the driver's door, 2 rear arches, spot on the sun roof, bit at the bottom of the front screen and dink behind passenger door and rear bumper. I just want the damage rust repaired and car / relevant parts sprayed red. Regards Nick

Al doesn't do it any more I just rang and was told they are moving to industrial painting. So any more recommendations please?
It would be a bit of a trek for you Nick but I've just had some paintwork done by these guys on my 360 : Langstaff Classics Ltd | Car Bodywork Repair and Paint Shop They did some work on my partner's car before we sold it last year and then earlier this year they painted air inlets and all the interior silverware on the 360 and did a really good job. Just before Christmas they painted the wings, bonnet, bumper and side skirts for me and again, did a great job. Small business, husband and wife team with one or two people working for them but they have a good level of attention to detail. One thing that is good though, for the front end etc. I had painted, they were less than half the price of what I was quoted by the 'go-to' people for Ferrari painting in Kent.
Hi Arron, thanks for this. I have just been to a local Polish body shop, they do TVRs. Porsches etc and have a good reputation locally in the trade. fing!ers X'd they give me a good quote. They say they will cut out the rot and replace with new metal and a full respray in Rosso again. Would the car be worth more if it was returned to metallic blue? the resale value must be better in red? Just bought a new dashboard for £100, so chuffed with that!!
What model do you have Nick ? In my opinion, the best value is always retained by keeping the car as original as possible, for instance, say if your car typically has a value of £5000 less in met blue than say an identical car in red, if you changed the original colour from blue to red, I think you could see a much larger reduction in value vs the price of an originally red car. Mind you, that's just my own personal take on it which harks back to my old Ford days - it could be that it's far more acceptable to do this in Ferrari circles.
I would say original colour would be worth more but it's your car and if you plan to keep it a while go with what you like it won't lose that much
Nick, I guess it depends how much you want to spend now.... As the change is already done, you sort of 'are where you are' with the car. It will of course cost a lot more to paint the whole car met blue as opposed to fixing the problems in red and the likely cost difference would exceed the hit you might take if you chose to sell the car in its non original colour. As RobinD said, it's really personal choice though, if you like red and plan to keep the car then stick with red and don't worry about it. For sure, 308 GT4s have hit their low point in terms of depreciation and the only way is up now for them, they also represent a good way to get in to the marque for not excessive amounts of cash as well so I think will become more and more attractive over the next few years. If I had another garage I would certainly be thinking of getting one as an investment car.

As a Blue owner you know what I think Nick! Though actually I never thought the car particularly suited red. But up to you. I will get back to you ref your PMs. The expensive bit is if you have rust in front of the windscreen (I think Richard knows that) as it needs the windscreen out and then will need a new Alu surround which is circa £1K and another £1K if they break the windscreen taking it out. A bare metal respray would certainly cost you £12K or more as they will undoubtedly find some more dodgy metal. Really depends what your future intentions are. I had originally thought of a complete respray as there are some imperfections from the last respray in 1990 but have been persuaded that this older paint is nice and I should just get the rot fixed and the bits that need touching up and I'm going to go down that route - not because of the money (which I would probably never recoup) but because of the patina bit. To be honest pretty much no-one notices the blemishes until I point them out. I'll be in contact soon.
Hi Francis I knew you would go for blue. The rust round the screen is an inch or so away from the glass, I know the price of the chrome, I think it cost my insurance £1800 when the screen went. But I have said I don't want it taken out. The main bits for me, lower door, rear arches and rear panel above the exhausts - plus a nasty ding on the passenger side and behind the bumper. The wheels are nicer than than you current ones ;-) Are they 16". I got a great price on Bridgestones at Costco. £320 for all four!
Yes both wheel arches, about 2" of each Only the driver's door. The Wheels are dirty and 16" they came off a 77 308 GT4, (burnt out) I have also got the dashboard from the same car, which is on ebay now. My paint/body man says if I strip the car down he will do me a good deal, he specialises in Porsche and TVR and does all the work for our local Audi dealer. I am seeing him later to discuss, I think I am tempted to go back to blue, then everything matches.

I'd try Tim Walker at Walkersports. He's a really nice guy and restores lots of older stuff at sensible prices. No affiliation, I've inspected a couple of the cars he's done so have spoken to him quite a bit and I also know a few guys that have used him...

I now have my new wheels, original 1980 Compomotive 3 piece split rims. I have been told these were a rare dealer option and were fitted to the original 308 gt4 when new. I'm going to get them refurbished, but they do look nice after a power wash! 225/50 16 rear and 205/55 16 front. The Pirellis that came of them were date marked week 34 1980 I also found this 1982 advert from Compomotive. Those will look great on the car, IMO! Very common in the '70s to want a 16" wheel, so often the dealers did offer alternatives. I would find a way to fit the OEM wheel cap, fabricate a bushing to get them installed.
Thank you I think so too! I found a site in the US that does wheel centre so have ordered a set from there. 3dcarstickers.com I have stripped them down, bought new seals and stainless m6 bolts, nuts and washers and will spend the next 20 years polishing them
