How can a man with no personality win 'Sports Personality of the year'?

okay, I couldn't really care less anyhow, as I've never watched it, nor voted, nor given a damn, but come on, BBC news this morning is boring me to tears with pics of this undoubtedly good tennis player boring his way through a speech receiving an award that by definition should be kept well away from him.

Do British sports people feel so underprivileged compared to their international peers that they need this dopey competition to feel wanted?

    Rant over!

To make it a little more relevant should be open to athletes of any nationality.

Personalities in sport do not exist any more, they can't.
To achieve success in sport you have to be a selfish, focused, healthy, athletic, fit, etc individual.
You cannot have a life outside of your chosen sport field from probably the age of 14 if you are to achieve greatness.
From circa that age you are turned in to conditioned robots.
There are so many kids now who believe they are the next Hamilton/McIlroy/Murray/Rooney/whoever but in order to be better than the next kid they have to do something different. That involves staying out of pubs, having no interest in the opposite sex (or the same if that is your thing) and ultimately not really having a life or any worldly experience. This creates dull, boring, monotone individuals (Murray/Rooney/Hamilton).
I played professional sport for a short while and I did not meet the above criteria and prior to that played amateur sport with some who are now household names earning millions but for me I was not selfish or boring enough to stay out of the pub and away from women to put the hours in practicing to make a career from playing the sport, and I don't really have any regrets.
