Excuse me. I have a little doubt. 4491GT is still in Italy and still belongs to Lucchini? Or not. Concerns the case of the error on presumed sold 5111GT in 2013? Lastly, 4491GT is still green? Or "re-painted red"? 250 GTO s/n 4491GT
Thank you both. So 4491 is still green! Barchetta wrong then. In fact I also found a picture of the recent restoration. I think it is a restoration done after the sale. But it is strange this supposed sale. In 2013 it was announced, many newspapers, that 5111GT has been sold. Instead it was not true. It was another GTO. Was 4991GT sold for 52 millions? Gone in South Africa?? Maybe! Image Unavailable, Please Login
No, the article stating GTO sold for US$52 mil. was made up, either in part or whole. This sale would likely have flown under the radar. Further this particular GTO was "slammed" as the americans term it while owned by Piper. Finally Barchetta isnt entirely accurate and I defer to other marque experts before deciding that something is accurate.
I say fly under the radar because if one private vendor sells to an end - user, either directly or via a broker, the first we the public may know that the sale has taken place is the next time the vehicle is shown publicly. Even then it isn't always announced who the entrant is. A lot of super wealthy collectors are notoriously private and don't want the publicity of public sale or the media that comes with it. The very public sale of #3851 was an anomaly, the last two to sell at auction were back in '00 (Not Sold by Bonhams) and before that in '91 (2 - both not sold). On average their would be perhaps 1 GTO sale per year so you can see most are sold very much under the radar. All of the sales in the last 25 years that Barchetta claims were made, 5 were auctioned (A), all of the others (approx. 52) were privately sold. 89 - 3869GT, 3909GT 90 - 3607GT (A) 91 - 3445GT (A), 3607GT, 3769GT (A) 92 - 3413GT, 3607GT 93 - 3223GT, 4219GT 94 - 3413GT, 3607GT, 3705GT, 3909GT 95 - 3445GT, 3769GT 96 - 3445GT, 3451GT, 4293GT, 4561SA, 4675GT, 5095GT, 5571GT, 5575GT 97 - 3387GT, 3505GT, 4153GT 98 - 3909GT, 4561SA, 5571GT 99 - 3729GT 00 - 3413GT, 3505GT, 3909GT, 4153GT, 4293GT (A) 01 - Nil 02 - 4293GT 03 - 3445GT, 4153GT 04 - 3223GT 05 - 3445GT,3505GT, 3527GT 06 - Nil 07 - 5095GT 08 - 5095GT, 5111GT 09 - Nil 10 - 3943GT, 4675GT, 4757GT 11 - Nil 12 - 3505GT, 4675GT, 5095GT, 5575GT 13 - 4491GT, 4675GT 14 - 3387GT (Rumoured to be for sale), 3851GT (A), 5573GT (?) Simon Kidston, Symbolic Motors, Duncan Hamilton and Talacrest have all sold multiple GTO's but are usually fairly quiet about who, what, why and when. As an example, Simon Kidston states on his website to contact him for his list of cars that he might have for sale but cannot advertise.............. qualified buyers only, right
No barchetta.cc is not wrong, 4491GT was sold moons ago to a very well known Ferrari collector based in South Africa. Before him, a UK-based collector tried to buy it but they could not agree on the purchase price. 4491GT was in the market since at least 2012 and all the usual suspects did know this, of course. Sure, but Barchetta also reports: "Ferrari Classic at ... body restored re-painted red". (250 GTO s/n 4491GT) However it would seem still green. Anyway thanks always of your precious information.
Thanks. I have now updated the detail page of 4491GT. It was indeed not repainted in red. Still wondering why it was restored again at Ferrari Classiche. When I visited Giuseppe Lucchini in 2011 the car looked really great and in very good condition. Regards Bjoern
