I had the pleasure of visiting the factory for an owners tour a few weeks. As a recent purchaser of a new 488 GTB, I was grateful for my dealer, Algar, for arranging the tour for me. The following day, I went back for a tour of the Classsiche department, which was really the highlight of my trip to Maranello. Though I have a brand new car, I love the vintage classics as well, so the visit was a real treat. I was very fortunate to see two of my favorites while there - a gorgeous 250 LM (all but completed) and a 250 TR. the TR was especially unique because the chassis and body were fully restored but the car was not reassembled yet. Still, every part was completely restored, organized and layed out on rolling shelves, waiting for assembly. Unfortunately, no photos were allowed, but I will always cherish that experience. I would love to hear from others who have been fortunate to do the same.

I toured Classiche in 2009, the week before the RM auction. As expected, the place was full of incredible Ferraris being fettled for the auction, and Eric Clapton's Lusso was in there for service. The highlight was when our host, the head of Classiche who has since, sadly, passed away, very graciously showed me all the original documents for my 330GTC. What a gentleman he was. I jokingly asked if he had a copying machine! A few weeks later I began the certification of my car.

*Public thank you to Rob Myers for arranging the tour for me on very short notice. In fact, it was Rob's idea. Many thanks!:)

It is a fantastic experience! I loved every second of the tour. I got to see a 250 LM, 250 GT Lusso, Daytona Spider, 288 GTO, 275 GTB, I forget the rest now, there were a few others. It was just amazing! I could have spent 10x the time in Classiche and not been bored for one moment. I will never forget that experience and to my friend who helped me arrange it. This is something every Ferrista should experience. Highly highly recommended!

"....a 250 LM, which placed 2nd at LeMans in 1960 with drivers Olivier Gendebien and Paul Frère sharing the seat; a stunning 250 TR fully restored to its original condition when delivered to Askolin in 1952;..."

A 250 LM did not place 2nd at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1960 with Olivier Gendebien and Paul Frere sharing the seat as they actually won the race in 250 Testa Rossa 59/60 #0774TR, not a 250 LM. The 250 LM didn't come out until 1963. The only 250 LM that placed 2nd at Le Mans was #6313 in 1965 driven by Dumay and Gosselin. The 250 TR did not come out until 1957 and Askolin's 250 TR #0742TR was delivered to him in 1958.

Is this poor record keeping on Ferrari Classiche's part, or poor reporting on Petrolicious's part?

Probably poor reporting. The factory race records are very detailed.

Many of the articles on Petrolicious are poorly edited. It seems to be a characteristic of that type of web site, trying to push out new content every day.

I clearly remember being on a factory tour in January 2011 where a 250 PF Coupe was on display and it was claimed as a winner of late 50's some super great race.

The original story I posted can be searched here on F-Chat.

When I called BS on the story, I was pointed out as not having any knowledge of old Ferrari's, which was common on the tour.

It pretty much pissed me off, but the guy on the tour with us, flew in on a helicopter, and had just taken delivery of something like 5 new cars in the last two years was a better customer than me.

They kissed his butt about his new 599, after he talked about buying his wife one, which I think was the second or third new 599 he had taken delivery of.

Interestingly enough, when I complained about the inaccurate info, the tour guide said they were sorry, but they were a third party company that could only discuss what they had been taught. pretty interesting....

Once I started to try and get more info about the Ellena I had, I suddenly realized how little was known.

The photos from the Petrolicious article are very interesting. As I mentioned at the beginning of this thread, on my recent visit to the Classiche Department at the factory in Maranello, I had the pleasure of seeing an all but finished 250 LM (it was red (likely rosso corsa or cina) with the bare racing interior and pano blue seats). It was gorgeous. I'm guessing the bare metal 250 LM featured in the photos you posted may likely be that car, given the timing of the article.
