If your car still has points I highly recommend replacing them with an electronic ignition of some sort as some of the original condensers are discontinued anyway and the change is inevitable.

I did it myself, the Marelli distributors are pretty easy to take apart. If you know how to adjust points, you can do this.

Peter,

Is this a DIY job?

John, best years to look for: early cars ('75 to '77). Anything before catalytic converters installed. These give the best performance. The most GT4's built were in '75 and there are plenty around.

Here are some photos to explain:

The Crane XR700 ignition controller unit:

The original points in the distributor:

The IR trigger sensor to replace points:

There are two coils, but controls each distributor. Basically, as the shutter wheel passes the IR sensor, openings in the shutter allow the IR light to send a signal to the computer. The computer then tells the coil to fire.

Peter,

Yes, it was Nick Scianna, and I am still contemplating having him build me a custom system for the Dino.

What are Crane XR 700's? Did you install a high voltage system (like MSD), or a new electronic system like the Super-4 I referenced earlier?

Does the GT4 have a secondary coil for emergency use like the Dino? If so, did you keep it?

Sorry for all these questions, but if I go with Nick's system I will spend a lot of money, and I want to make sure I am doing the right thing. Thanks.

What would you say are the best years for the GT4?

Steven, I've installed Crane XR700's to replace the points. Since I'm still working on my car, I don't know how well it works, but going from Greg Roger's (he posts here) experience, it's quite a difference.

Who did you speak to up here? He probably has Nick's system in his car.

I am 6'1" tall and fit in mine with no problem, Matter of fact I will pull the seat up a few notches to make sure the clutch is completely depressed. As for points I have the stock setup with the exception of omiting the dual point setup and running the single point instead. The carbs have been great since they were set. Tthe only gremmies were a couple of electrical issues.
They are a ton of fun to drive and nothing beats the carb sound when blasting the coast by my home.
You can see a photo of mine under my username on top.

Peter,

Which electronic ignition system did you install?
Any improvement? Did you go with a breakerless system?

I'm thinking of replacing the Dinoplex unit and am trying to find out the best options. I spoke to someone in Vancouver recently, and he has a direct coil (no distributor) system-have you heard of it?

It can be a reliable driver if an electronic ignition system is used. Carbs, once they're properly set, need very little to do afterwards.

Gremlins are usually in the electrical system (ie: poor ground connections due to corrosion, stuck relays, etc...).

My neighbor is over 6' and I gave him a ride in it. He cranked the seat back and down, but still had a bit of room on top of his head.

The years you seek, are usually all sunroof cars (I stress usually. There are always exceptions with Ferrari). Watch out for major rust with these.

Any more questions you have, you may email me (click on my name above).

I am looking to purchase a 1978-79 308 GT4. Would it make a good daily driver or are the carbs too tempermental? Can a 6' guy sit comfortably without having to put the seat in an awkward position? ANY advice on this model would be greatly appreciated.
(Forgive me for posting the same question under the wrong subject.)

Thanks in advance.
