First off, much thanks to Doody endured, over the phone, 45 minutes of explanation. For those that don't know, those 'screws' don't un-wind, you turn them and pull, then the panel comes down.

So - the problem turned out to be fuse 21 blown. Simple fix, obviously, but now even the trunk is back in working order. This is a bit strange to me, but if someone else comes across the problem of a faulty trunk switch, check the cigar lighter fuse first (??).

Doody,

I should have clarified - I hear the 'clicking' when I try to pull the emergency release cable, but not when I press the relay switch. My guess is the fuse is dead, but it took quite a few pulls on that cable to release the trunk. Maybe that needs some WD-40.

I'll try to peek in more detail when there's light tomorrow. There's a metal plate blocking part of the footwell that might be unscrewed.

Thanks for the insight so far...

i've been in the fuse box before, dan.

i don't recall offhand whether the carpet just pulled back and the panel had weird bolts or whether the two odd bolts were part of getting the carpet out.

the bolts/fasteners are really annoying - be very careful when you reinsert them - you can push them too far and then they get really stuck.

sorry i can't be more help offhand. if you still haven't sussed it by morning i'll rip mine open again to give you a blow-by-blow.

when you hit the trunk open button can you hear a notable "click" in the passenger footwell? that'd be the relay tripping, which in theory means the fuse is okay. if you don't hear a relay, it might simply be a bad fuse. but you say you can hear SOMETHING trying to do something, so the fuse is probably okay.

keep us posted.

doody.

Hmm - it must be. Now if only I could get to the fuse box under the passenger carpet. Anyone removed that carpeting below the floormat before? WHere does it pull off?

With the alarm beeping 4 times after you lock it, it is telling you that something is not secure, such as your trunk or your hood. Sounds like your trunk latch (electric) is malfunctioning.

So as of today, something new has come up;

When locking the car, the alarm beeps once (as is normal) - pauses, and then successively beeps 4 times. It makes normal sounds when unlocking.

The cigar lighter is dead.

But the most strange of all - the trunk release does not work. I tried the manual trunk release, and that won't unlock it either. I can hear some sort of mechanical device 'trying' to release when pulling on the manual release, but it's not actually unlocking.

Not sure how to get to the fuse box, as there's a carpet that doesn't want to seem to move / lift off (below the floormat).

Any ideas?
